Simeranya – A Complete Solution To Downloading Music & Video Off The Web [Windows]
There are a handful of ways to do it, but we’re always looking for a more efficient and easier way of downloading music and video content that we stream from websites online. You and every one of your friends probably already know a viable method of saving a local copy of your favorite music from YouTube . It’s one of those tips that everyone on the internet passes around. It’s almost to the equivalent of knowing how to dazzle up your old MySpace profile.
You can never save from too many sources and it can never get too easy, though. Months ago, I turned the MakeUseOf audience towards Songr . Still today, it’s one of those under-the-radar pieces of software that stands out to me as one of the best in its class. Simeranya is in that same category.
The name may come across as a little funky and hard to pronounce at first, but there’s nothing difficult about this application. Simeranya requires .NET Framework 4.0+ and any version of Windows from XP SP3 onward.
The interface is clean, and upon launching the application you can see that it looks a lot like one of those older P2P clients that we all used to share music on. Maybe even a polished Napster, which is what the logo reminds me of.
Searching with Simeranya allows you to crawl popular music and video sites like YouTube, DailyMotion, SoundCloud, Grooveshark, MP3Skull, VKontakte, and more. After searching, you’re instantly able to preview or download the content you’ve found.
As you can see in the above screenshot, your results are filtered by each website that has been crawled. This is very convenient because Simeranya processes downloads as the format native to the website. For example, searching YouTube will download both the video and audio. Searching Grooveshark will only download audio.
If you’re looking for one or the other, you can immediately narrow down your results to what is relevant.
Right-clicking any result after a search will allow you to immediately download, preview, or filter the result to a list. You can also tick checkboxes by several results to perform actions in bulk.
Downloading files will pop over a window displaying the speed, status, path, and data remaining. Again, the way this works with the UI reminds me a lot of those popular, nostalgic P2P clients from years ago. You’re able to cancel downloads, clear completed downloads, and select a download path.
Importing and exporting lists is a very convenient and simple feature that can be used for many different purposes. After a successful search, tick boxes by any results that you’d like to save to a list. From here, all you have to do is select Export List under the File menu, and only your ticked results will be saved.
At any time, you can import your list from that same menu and have access to the ticked results. I’ve used this feature many times for when I’ve wanted to save downloads for later, or this could even be used as a clever way to create a sort of playlist within the Simeranya application.
Another thoughtful feature that Simeranya supports is the ability to manually resolve and convert any link from any of the plugin services that it supports. Rather than using one of the dodgy YouTube-to-MP3 services that you can find online, pasting a YouTube URL here will allow you to immediately download and save the video.
While Simeranya’s settings are quite limited, it covers most of what is necessary and expected. You’re able to check the program for automatic updates, toggle clipboard monitoring (for manual downloads), and choose if you’d like downloads to be converted to standard formats when completed. Many websites force you to download their content in an obscure format and it’s nice that Simeranya can convert them for you.
Simeranya is an application that any desktop or laptop user can benefit from. If you’re a bit of a hoarder like me and have a ridiculous music and video collection, an application like this is practically a must. What do you think of Simeranya and its features? How does it compare to alternatives such as Songr? Drop me a line in the comments and let’s discuss!
