See How Many Years of Life You’re Losing to Addictions

Joel Lee 19-08-2016

We always hear about how addictions can shorten your lifespan, but that kind of talk has always been a bit too abstract for me. I know in the back of my mind that addictions are bad, but it’s hard to take it seriously.

Which is why the Addiction Calculator by Omni Calculator is so eye-opening. Just plug in a few numbers and you’ll see how many years you’re losing due to your addictions.

This web app covers six particular addictions as of this writing (I’m not sure if any others are planned to be implemented in the future):

  • Alcoholic drinks
  • Cigarettes
  • Cocaine
  • Meth
  • Methadone pills
  • Heroin shots

All of these calculations are based solely on statistics, so if you know of someone who smoked a pack of cigarettes every day and lived until they were 100 years old, don’t bother. Individual anecdotes don’t negate statistical trends.

Omni Calculator also has dozens of other useful calculators that you should check out, such as the Business, Finance, and Fitness calculators.

What spurred me to quit cigarettes is what I saw as the escalating prices - these were merely 50 cents or 75 cents a pack when I started and were pushed up mostly by government taxes to around $2.50 (along with some "normal" inflation)

This is not to say I support this practice (sine taxes ?) by the government particularly when it seems to punish those least able to pay more than others.
