Google Maps is a big part of our everyday mobile experience now. Unlock your iPhone, and with a few taps you can see directions to anywhere in the world.
But when you’re in a hurry, especially when you’re driving, unlocking your phone and launching Google Maps can be a bit too much (and a bit dangerous).
The swifter solution? A Google Maps lockscreen widget that works like a shortcut.
How to See Google Maps Directions on the Lockscreen
The widget screen can be seen without unlocking the phone. It’s also handy when you want to show someone the directions without giving them open access to other apps in there:
- Swipe left from the lock screen on your iPhone to display the list of installed widgets.
- To add a widget for Google Maps, scroll down the screen to the Edit button.
- Scroll down the list of available widgets till you find Google Directions.
- Tap on the green Add symbol to include the Google Directions widget to the Today view on the Widgets screen.
- Tap Done.
To remove a widget, come back to the same screen and tap the red Minus icon. To reorder your widgets, touch and hold next to the apps and drag them in the order that you want.
Now, without unlocking the screen, you can check out the directions and time estimates for places you searched for in the Google Maps app. Use the scroll arrows on the Google Directions widget to follow the turn-by-turn route. One tap on the widget and you can reach the Google Maps app. (But you will need to unlock the phone for that.)
The lockscreen widget makes it a lot easier to quickly scan the direction without unlocking your device every time. It’s one of those hidden iPhone features that make you more productive.
