The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip was one of the most surprising phones to launch in recent memory. While most of us were focused on the more expensive and bigger Galaxy Fold, Samsung also dropped a clamshell-style foldable phone.

Now, Samsung has updated the original Galaxy Z Flip with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G. As the name implies, this version of the phone features 5G network support, but it comes with some other improvements over the original as well. Of course, it also comes with a higher price tag.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G Specs

What makes the Galaxy Z Flip 5G stand out from its predecessor is the new processor. As it features the incredibly powerful Snapdragon 865+. The new chip provide a big jump in power over the Snapdragon 855+ that was included in the original Galaxy Z Flip.

It's even more powerful than the Snapdragon 865 that comes with the Galaxy S20 Ultra. That fancy new processor is supported by 8GB of RAM, which is the same as the original.

All that power will help with Flex mode, which is the multitasking functionality explicitly designed for this device. While not new, Samsung has promised some notable improvements to the experience with the Galaxy Z Flip 5G, including updates to the way YouTube works with Flex mode and improvements to the camera app.

Outside of the faster performance offered by the new processor, it also adds 5G connectivity (is 5G dangerous?), which is a big deal going forward.

Cosmetically, Samsung is offering the device in two new colors. There's Mystic Bronze and Mystic Gray, and they both look beautiful.

Now that we've seen what's new let's take a look at where things have stayed the same. First, the phone still features a 6.7-inch display that folds along its horizontal axis. This creates that immediately recognizable clamshell design. The screen features a 2636 x 1080 resolution. On the outside, there's the small 1.1-inch display with a 300 x 112 resolution.

The cameras remain unchanged. Which means a dual 12MP setup on the back and a 10MP selfie camera on the front.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G Price and Availability

The price of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G is a little more than the original Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, but not as much as you might expect for a phone with a faster processor and 5G connectivity.

While the original retailed for $1,380, the new model is slated to sell for $1,449. A $70 jump for 5G is quite reasonable, though the phone is still expensive compared to non-foldable models.

Samsung intends to make the Galaxy Z Flip 5G available on August 7, 2020. It'll be sold through AT&T and T-Mobile. Amazon and Best Buy will also sell the handset.

If you're planning to buy one of these, make sure you understand how to take better photos first, because you're going to want to make the most of that excellent Flex mode.
