Pocket Casts has been a thing for a long time and it works on pretty much everything. If you're using it properly, you have a playlist and the only control you really need is the ability to start and stop playback on your smart speaker vs. resuming it on another device.

Apple's pod listening tools are (dictionary definition) retarded compared to most other apps; last I checked, users could only choose to download a set, limited number of episodes and only allowed relatively small maximum number of episodes in a feed. Setting aside all the other reasons I specifically dislike Apple products, this is a bad starting point, even if usability via Alexa is an improvement.

I’ve been listening to Podcasts on my Echo for a long time with both Stitcher and iHeartRadio. I’ll have to try the Apple version.

Yes, you could already listen to podcasts, but now you can play them using Alexa voice commands. I use Spotify, but Apple Podcasts is definitely worth a look.
