While people did used to binge-watch DVD boxsets, the streaming service HAS changed the way we all watch TV. So what exactly is the deal with people who spend their days watching Netflix?

Netflix has published the results of a survey into viewing habits amongst binge-watchers, and the results are fascinating. They show that the average binge-watcher doesn’t care where they are when they’re binge-watching Netflix, as long as they get to keep tuning into their favorite shows.

Watching Netflix Outside of Your Home

Netflix recently commissioned a survey of 37,056 people. The results show how commonplace binge-watching has become, and how we’ll happily carry on watching Netflix regardless of where we are or what we’re doing. In fact, 67% of respondents now watch Netflix away from home.

Watching Netflix on the go is such a common sight that 45% of respondents have caught someone else snooping on their screen. And while 18% admit to feeling embarrassed over what they were watching, the majority (77%) refused to stop watching when a stranger sneaks a view.

Snooping on someone else’s screen does come with some risks though, as 11 percent of public binge-watchers have seen a spoiler on someone else’s screen. And 27% of us respondents have had someone interrupt their innocent binge-watching habit to start a conversation. Which is rude.

According to Quartz, 26% of respondents have watched Netflix while at work. Presumably while they were meant to be working. And a small but significant 7% of respondents admit to having watched Netflix in a public restroom. Which is all kinds of wrong for obvious reasons.

Convenience Trumps Everything

The big takeaway from this survey is how many of us now watch Netflix on our phones or tablets. Which, given their small screens, isn’t the ideal way to watch TV. Obviously convenience now trumps everything, and people just don’t feel the need to sit in front of a 50-inch television enjoying the visual splendour of TV.
