Your homescreen: You see it every time you switch on your phone, which is dozens of times a day for some of us. Why not make it beautiful? Today I’d like to share two interesting live wallpapers, both of which feature clean vector graphics.
Before we dig in, if the very notion of live wallpapers turns you off, you can hop over to one of our previous posts describing the world’s best free mobile wallpaper app (spoiler alert: it’s your browser), or Freshbacks, a simple way to rotate static wallpapers on your homescreen.
Now that we’ve got only the serious live wallpaper fans in the room, check out those animations:
The name’s misleading, the wallpaper’s great. This has nothing to do with Google Now, except for the visual style. To get a feel for what this live wallpaper offers, you should really watch the video above, as the effect is impossible to convey with screenshots. I’m going to try anyway:
These are two consecutive screenshots taken seconds from each other. The boats are sailing along in the calm vector-style water, but note the location of the sun: It, too, is different. That’s because I was tilting my device in different directions while capturing the screenshots. The parallax effect (which you may have seen on iOS 7) creates an illusion of depth. Pretty funky, though it’s too bad there’s just one scene in the free version (the paid version includes lighting effects that change according to the time of day). Since this live wallpaper is free, there’s nothing to lose by checking it out. Here’s a look at the settings:
You can control how smooth the animation is, how sensitively it reacts to you moving the phone around, the number of clouds, and the speed in which different elements move on the screen. I don’t expect many people will use this live wallpaper on a long-term basis, but it’s a fun diversion.
Trianglism Live Wallpaper($1.29)
Now let’s get trippy:
Trianglism Live is made by Vectors and Pixels, the same guys who are behind previously-reviewed Origami live wallpaper. What you see above is just one possible look for this incredibly configurable live wallpaper. Here’s just a quick look at some of the settings it offers:
And here are two other looks for it:
Trianglism shares many settings with Origami. You choose an overall layout for the screen from a dropdown (Twirl and Standard two screenshots up, Pyramid and Confrontation on the one just above). You can then tap the dice to randomly rotate colors, only there’s no way to go back to a previous setting. Just like on the Google Now Parallax live wallpaper, you can control both the speed in which elements move on the screen, and the FPS (frames per second) to determine how smooth the animation is):
Finally, Trianglism keeps things interesting by giving you the option to randomly switch between layouts from time to time.
These Are Just Two Options
I am quite picky about my wallpaper choices, so I understand these aren’t for everyone, as pretty as I think they are. If you’re looking for more options, check out 11 Fascinating Android Live Wallpapers to Animate Your Home Screen — or share your favorite live wallpaper in the comments below!
