The Nintendo Switch has already outsold the Wii U. And this is after just 10 months on sale. Having previously learned that the Nintendo Switch is now the fastest-selling games console of all time in the United States we knew it had started, but this statistic is still surprising.

Nintendo has released its financials for 2017, and they show that the Switch is doing better than anyone could have imagined. The hardware has been flying off the shelves, and games such as Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe have followed closely behind.

Nintendo Switches Things Up

Nintendo released the Switch worldwide in March 2017, and thanks to a solid launch, and strong sales over the holidays, it has already surpassed the Wii U. A total of 14.86 million units of the Switch had been sold to the end of 2017. Which is one million more units than the Wii U.

The Wii U, complete with its tablet-style controllers, was an interesting concept, but not one that appealed to the masses. Which is why Nintendo only managed to shift 13.56 million units in the five years it was on sale. Nintendo needed a win, and the Switch is providing that.

Alongside the hardware, Nintendo is also reporting strong numbers on the software front. Super Mario Odyssey is now the biggest game on the Switch, with 9.07 million copies sold. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has managed 7.33 million, Breath of the Wild 6.70 million, and Splatoon 2 4.91 million.

The good news for both Nintendo and Switch owners is that developers are keen to make games for the system. The schedule IS looking a little light on Triple-AAA titles over the next few months, but Labo and its DIY cardboard kits is due to arrive in April, so parents can focus on that.

We Need More Switch Games

The Switch is a return to form for Nintendo. And despite there only having been a handful of must-play games released so far the Switch is selling extremely well. Now we just need Nintendo to keep the first-party titles coming while encouraging third-parties to get to work too.

Have you bought a Nintendo Switch yet? If so, what made you buy it? Is it all about the games? Or do you just really like the home/handheld form factor? If you don't own a Switch are you planning on buying one in the not-too-distant future? Please let us know in the comments below!
