Moqups: Quickly Create iOS Mockups

Justin Pot 08-04-2013

Got an idea for an app? Quickly create a mockup. Moqups is a web app with stencils of most of the user interface elements that makes up smartphone and tablet apps – from radio to back buttons, from confirmation to notification popups, from graphs to switches. Pick what you’re designing for – an iPhone or an iPad – by dragging it from the list. Then mock up your user interface with these common UI elements. I made this is 2 minutes:

You can rotate the devices for horizontal mockups, important because any worthwhile app needs to work horizontally and vertically. Can’t find an element you’re looking for, or want to design your own? With an account you can upload your own images and add them to your designs.

The site is built entirely in HTML5, meaning it should work on just about any device. Mockups can be saved on the cloud – and can even link to other designs in the same project, allowing you to roughly emulate the app experience if you spend enough time on it. You can even export your mockups to PDF documents or PNG images, allowing you to easily print or email for sharing with friends and colleagues.

  • An easy-to-use HTML5 web app.
  • Quickly mockup an iPhone or iPad app
  • Link between different mockups in the same project to roughly emulate the app experience
  • Export mockups to PDF or PNG
  • Great for would-be app designers and professionals alike

I have tinkered around with Moqups. Was pleased to see them go to paid subscriptions recently. I always get a little nervous (and skeptical) when I see new, free wireframing apps come out.

I use a pretty similar tool from time to time (Lucidchart) which I have really liked. The collaboration is hard to beat, as are the iPad/iPhone graphics: https://www.lucidchart.com/pages/examples/ipad-mockup-tool
