Have a Few Minutes? Improve Google Maps on Your Android

Google Maps is an awesome navigation service; we’ve reviewed everything you need to know about its Android version. Whether you’re looking for restaurants in the area or planning the best route for your next trip, Maps is a great asset to have.

Though Maps is one of the most popular, there are also plenty of lesser-known Android apps made by Google that are worth checking out. One of them you might not have heard of is Crowdsource, a small app that lets you improve Google services by completing quick tasks.

The app lets you help Google’s automated services in five categories — transcribing images, recognizing handwriting, translating, validating translations, and validating translations on Maps. Choose a category, and you’ll be presented with a series of micro tasks that can be completed in just a few seconds each.

You’ll need to be fluent in at least two languages to work on the latter three categories, but anyone can pitch in for handwriting recognition or transcribing images. These images are typically street signs that Google Maps can’t automatically pick up.

The tasks are similar to those in modern Google CAPTCHAs, which serve the dual purpose of preventing spam and solving similar image transcriptions. While Crowdsource is a great way to kill a few minutes productively, some might cry foul. There’s no reward incentive like the Google Rewards app, which gives Google Play credit for answering short surveys.

Others might object that Google lame for providing this app and asking for free labor, but it’s all in how you see it. Certainly, spending five minutes with this app does more good for the world than playing Candy Crush. It’s up to you if you’d like to give it a try and better Google’s services.

Does Crowdsource sound like an app you’d enjoy participating in, or do you feel like Google isn’t being fair since they don’t reward you? Bring your thoughts in with a comment!
