How to Make Skype Web Calls on Linux

Joel Lee 08-02-2017

Ever since Microsoft took over Skype, things haven’t exactly been going uphill. Features have gone missing, performance has slowed down in several areas, and the web client is still too subpar to be usable on a day-to-day basis.

All of this is made even worse if you’re on Linux.

As of this writing, you cannot make any calls if you’re using Skype for Web on a Linux system unless you use Chrome. Seeing as how most Linux users choose the operating system for its freedom, security, and open source nature, you probably don’t use Chrome.

So what can you do?

Fortunately, there’s a nifty workaround that you can use to make voice calls with Skype for Web on Linux using any major web browser. All you have to do is trick Skype into thinking that you’re using Edge on Windows, and you can do this by changing your browser’s user agent.

On Firefox, install the User Agent Overrider extension. On Opera, install the User-Agent Switcher extension. For both of them, just switch to their relevant “Edge on Windows” user agent and you should be good to go.

On any other browser that lets you set a custom user agent string, use the following:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/51.0.2704.79 Safari/537.36 Edge/14.14393

Now refresh Skype for Web and you should be able to make voice calls. Unfortunately, video calls aren’t supported as of this writing. Hopefully that changes in the future.

Do you use Skype on Linux? How often do you use the web client, and when you do, which browser do you use? Got any other thoughts on the matter? Let us know below!

However it does not work. The buttons become active and a call can be initiated the call drops right away when the remote party picks it up.

The same remote works flawlessly from Chrome.

Have you actually tested several calls before suggesting this?
