Instagram has added what it calls face filters to the app. These are augmented reality filters that place fun things on your face when taking selfies. Yes, the very same feature Snapchat has offered since 2015. And with that Instagram has successfully cloned Snapchat in almost every way.
It wasn’t all that long ago that selfies weren’t even called selfies. And now everyone takes selfies at any and every opportunity. However, it’s no longer good enough simply to take a selfie of your normal face, now you have to add a dumb filter to it to add to your millennial mystique.
Make Yourself Wear Digital Fancy Dress
Instagram’s face filters are almost identical to Snapchat’s selfie filters. These are animated layers to add a little variety to your selfies. You can make yourself look like a rabbit, picture yourself wearing nerdy spectacles, and more besides, all without actually having to wear fancy dress.
There are initially eight face filters to choose from, with Instagram promising more to come. To access them, just open the camera, and tap the face icon in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. Then just tap a filter to try it on, and when you’ve found the right one, take a photo.
Instagram has also added some new creative tools. There’s Rewind, which lets you play a video in reverse. There are hashtag stickers, which let you add context to your photos. And there’s the new eraser brush, which lets you fill a photo with color before revealing certain parts of it.
All of these new features are available with the release of Instagram v10.21 on Android and on iOS. And while they may not be the most original ideas in the world, they should provide Instagram users with hours of fun as they try to make their lives look better than they actually are.
Imitation Is the Sincerest Form of Flattery
This isn’t the first time Instagram has “borrowed” a feature from Snapchat. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but Snapchat may disagree. Regardless, it means Instagram and Snapchat are now almost identical, so you may as well just pick one and be done with it.
Do you use Instagram? Do you use Snapchat? Which do you prefer? Do you feel Instagram has blatantly copied features from Snapchat? Or are features such as selfie filters fair game? Is there room for both Instagram and Snapchat? Please let us know in the comments below!
