Instagram is finally adding comment threads. This should put an end to those disorganized threads where everyone is talking to everyone and no one at the same time. Instagram's parent company Facebook has offered threaded comments for years, but it's better late than never.

Comments sections are a strange beast. That's true whether they're on websites, social networks, or apps such as Instagram. People will say anything. And it's often naughty, nasty, or nonsense. However, regardless of the quality of comments, threaded conversations are a Godsend.

Threaded Comments... Finally!

Instagram is now adding comment threads. In a nutshell, this means that the long line of continuous comments which all feed back to the original post are no more. Instead, comments are separated out to actual conversations, with replies to individual comments grouped together.

This makes it possible to actually have conversations with other people in the comments. Which is, or at least should be, an integral part of an app like Instagram. It shouldn't have taken Instagram this long to add threaded comments, but now that they're arrived we won't complain.

In its blog post announcing the change, Instagram states that it wants to "make your feed an even better place to share interests, get inspired and connect with others." Which makes perfect sense, as the more people are interacting with you and others, the more likely they are to stick around.

With threaded comments pretty much standard across the web you should already know how to use them. However, just in case you're none the wiser, just hit "Reply" under the exact comment you want to reply to. Your response will then automatically appear underneath that comment.

Threaded comments are being introduced with Instagram version 24 both on Android and on iOS.

Keeping Bots and Trolls At Bay

This is admittedly only a small update for Instagram, but it's an important one nonetheless. Threaded comments should, alongside the other changes the company has made recently, help people get even more out of Instagram. All while keeping bots and trolls at bay. Fingers crossed.

Are you happy about Instagram adding comment threads? Or were you happy with the long line of comments? Do you think threaded comments will help or hinder Instagram? Are you likely to have more conversations on Instagram as a result? The comments are open below!
