Make sure your speakers are turned up because we’re going to play a game — a fun educational word game that will help to build up your spelling and pronunciation skills. Unlike many other word games, you’ll actually need your voice for this one!
Speak to Play
Spell Up is a Chrome experiment that relies on the latest Web API and speech recognition technologies to turn your browser into a spelling bee arena.
Here’s how you play it:
When you begin the game, choose your level from the three on offer: Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced. The end goal of the game is to correctly spell the words you hear over the speakers and use them to build a tower (of words). You have to stack the tower letter by letter, word by word. But there are some challenges you have to overcome:
- Words get progressively difficult as you go higher.
- You have to pronounce words correctly, solve anagrams, and guess the correct words by filling in the missing letters.
You can also use your keyboard to type the letters. Of course, like all games, there’s a lifeline. You can earn coins and bonuses. Use them to unlock “powerups” and leap to each level faster.
You can play Spell Up in Chrome on your desktop and on Android phones and tablets.
Build Up Your Spelling Skills
Simple browser games like Spell Up are good for those micro-moments you can use to improve some part of your vocabulary. You will benefit a lot from it if English isn’t your native language. Even if it is, the level of difficulty as you go higher up the tower will surprise you. Google encourages teachers to try it out in their classrooms.
Which is your favorite word game in the browser? Is Spell Up too simple for you or just right for some plain fun?
