While there’s a ton of great PlayStation 4 games that you should pick up, money is always an issue. After all, the hot new games are usually $60 a pop, and that adds up quickly. If you’re saving to upgrade to a PS4 Pro (our review), you probably don’t want to spend on every new game.
If you’re a PS4 gamer on a budget, or just want some inexpensive fun, there are plenty of free games that are worth checking out. The only cost to these great games is your time, and maybe a few bucks for in-game purchases.
1. Let It Die
If you’re a fan of action games, then Let It Die is a must. It’s a hack and slash game that some people say is similar to Dark Souls‘s gameplay. There’s also some outrageous quirks and humor that will keep players entertained.
Let It Die takes place in 2026, and the story reveals that a large tectonic disturbance resulted in destruction around the world. Part of Tokyo has split off into the ocean and is now its own island, blanketed by a deep and inescapable fog. The seismic activity on that island continues to rage on. As a result, a large spire erupts from the ocean, creating an infinite tower on the isolated island.
You have to make your way through the floors of the tower to reach the top, which no one has ever done before. There’s a skateboarding grim reaper character, Uncle Death, who guides you and calls you “senpai” along your journey to the top. But it won’t be easy.
Ascending the Tower
There are plenty of deadly monsters in the tower that you’ll have to face off against, including bosses. Fortunately, there are loads of cool weapons and armor to discover, as well as tasty mushrooms to eat that help you stay alive.
While Let It Die has your standard go-to weapons like swords, axes, and guns, there are some more eccentric items, such as the Fireworks Launcher. You can also make mushroom grenades and toss them at foes, but be careful about accidentally eating them.
There’s a light roguelike element to Let It Die, which helps keep the replay value high. When you die, there’s an option to continue with another life if you have enough of the premium currency. Let It Die may be a free-to-play game, but it’s fairly generous with the in-game currency so you don’t have to spend any real money to get some. A new run through the tower always has slight differences, but it’s not completely random like other roguelikes.
Once your character dies, they’ll remain dead, but can appear in other player’s games if they’re stolen. You can also pay Uncle Death gold or premium currency to revive your favorite characters and keep their gear.
Let It Die is a must for anyone looking for a free game that’s full of action and fun.

In the mood for a sci-fi third-person co-op shooter? Warframe fits that description. It’s similar to Destiny (great if you’ve exhausted the challenges to keep that game interesting), except there’s much more character customization and you can get everything in the game without spending a dime.
In Warframe, players take control of members of a species called the Tenno. They’re a race of ancient warriors who look like ninjas that just awoke from cryosleep. You’ll soon discover that they are at war with disfigured and infected human clones originally made as weapons. Tennos fortunately have super-cool biomechanical suits, the Warframes, that can channel their unique abilities and be of great use in battle.
While there is a single-player campaign with a story in Warframe, it’s a game best enjoyed with friends. You can have up to three other members in your team, and embark on missions scattered throughout the solar system on various planets. And with a full team, players can focus on balance and synergy with healers, tanks, and damage dealers.
There are several different types of quests in Warframe, and maps are always procedurally-generated. Goals include eliminating all enemies, assassinating a single powerful target, hacking into terminals to retrieve data, defending artifacts, and surviving as long as you can. If that’s not enough, Warframe even has endless wave missions that truly test your skill.
Customization is a big part of Warframe. This extends the longevity of the game, even if it may be a bit repetitive and grindy. There are dozens of different Warframes with unique abilities, and players have the freedom to change the color to their liking. Additionally, there’s a ton of different weapons to pick from. You can go with melee options like katanas, or ranged with bows and guns.
The coolest thing about Warframe, though, is the parkour action. Characters can jump, sprint, slide, and roll while attacking, which leads to some cool moves. There’s nothing quite like sliding on the floor while taking out an enemy with your bow.
Warframe‘s biggest negative is that it becomes a bit grindy (think Monster Hunter), so you need to put hours into the game if you want good gear. This can be a drag, but remember: you can obtain everything in the game without spending real money (unless you’re impatient). It just takes time.
If you’re searching for a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game on your PS4, Paragon is worth a try. Paragon is Epic Games’s first foray into the MOBA genre, and it’s powered by their own Unreal Engine 4.
In Paragon, players will find a third-person MOBA that looks gorgeous with asymmetrical maps set in lush environments. The game features 10 different heroes for you to choose from, each having their own set of skills and weapons. The play style for all heroes is unique, so it’s recommended to try them all and see which one fits you best.
Every hero has a primary attack and four abilities at their disposal. Some of these are active attacks used in battle, while others are passive buffs that help you and your team. There’s also an ultimate ability for each hero, but this must charge first.
All matches in Paragon have a simple goal: defeat the enemy team by destroying the core that is located in their base. Teams consist of five players, and everyone must make use of their hero’s skills to stop the opposing team. Maps always have three lanes, which players use to try to get to the enemy base. However, each base is also protected by defensive towers.
Unlike most MOBAs with a top-down perspective like League of Legends, Paragon uses an over-the-shoulder angle. Thus, it sometimes feels like a third-person shooter. But this isn’t the case, because it’s slower than those games. Players still have to aim their attacks and skills, as there’s no auto-aim functionality.
When an enemy or tower falls, the player who destroyed it gets experience and card points. Experience lets you level up and upgrade abilities or even unlock new ones. The cards create a deck, which you use to get other upgrades for heroes. These include health boosts and artifacts that enhance power.
If you’re worried that Paragon is a pay-to-win kind of game, rest assured that it’s not. All heroes are free, with in-game purchases only unlocking cosmetics that don’t affect gameplay at all. You can purchase those additional items with real money, or coins from loot chests.
Paragon provides a fresh MOBA experience on PS4, and is a must for anyone who’s into the genre. If you’re new to MOBAs, we have a guide to find out which one is right for you.
For the comic book fans, Marvel Heroes Omega is a real treat. This is an action role-playing game that features all your favorite characters, both heroes and villains, from the Marvel universe.
Since the game takes place in the Marvel universe, there’s an in-depth story that players get to unravel as they play. The plot is rather complicated, but it involves familiar enemy forces, such as Doctor Doom, HYDRA, William Stryker, Lady Deathstrike, and many more.
The storyline in Marvel Heroes Omega basically takes all of Marvel’s history and mashes it together into one ultimate storyline that will appeal to all fans.
Players can choose from a huge roster containing over 100 characters (hero and villain) from Marvel. All characters fall into an archetype. They’re either melee or ranged, and have their own unique abilities as well as talent trees. The maximum level cap is 60 for all characters.
Like a typical MMORPG, you embark on various missions, challenges, and go into dungeons with your chosen characters. Completing quests or dungeons nets rewards, such as currency, experience points, alternate costumes, weapons, or Team-Up characters. The Team-Up characters are non-playable characters that players summon as extra help or backup in battle.
Once a character levels up, you get skill points to spend on upgrades for your character’s abilities. You’re free to choose different play styles for each character, since each one has three different options.
To truly feel invested in Marvel Heroes Omega, you’ll want to partake in raids. These are like tougher dungeons that require 10 players to go through a series of unique boss fights. Raids are different from typical dungeons because of the timer and death limit.
There’s a huge story in Marvel Heroes Omega that’ll appease comic book fans. Plus, the large roster covers everyone’s favorite super heroes and villains, including the more obscure ones. Marvel Heroes Omega is worth a download for anyone who wants some superhero fun on their console.

What if you prefer the DC universe over Marvel? Then the MMORPG DC Universe Online is what you need.
In DC Universe Online, players create their own unique character that isn’t just an existing DC character. There’s more customization involved, as you can choose male or female, hero or villain, body type, personality traits, movement mode, weapons, and special powers. You’re essentially able to create your very own hero or villain character — who hasn’t dreamed of doing that?
Once you make your character, you must fight your way out of a spaceship. There’s no dull moment here, as players get thrown right into the action. Eventually, the character becomes a member of the Justice League (hero) or The Society (villain), and then must perform missions to level up and hone their skills.
Just like with Marvel Heroes Omega, DC Universe Online also has a rather complex plot that merges all settings of DC characters into one. You’ll see your favorite heroes, such as Batman, Flash, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Superman, and more. And if you prefer villains, there’s Lex Luthor, Joker, Harley Quinn, Black Adam, and many more.
As your character completes missions for the Justice League or The Society, you gain experience points. Get enough of them and you level up. When a character levels up, their stats become stronger, and you get skill points to spend for useful abilities.
When you hit level 30, the real game begins — this is when all endgame content becomes available. You’ll have access to the coolest and strongest weapons, raids, and other goodies.
Even though DC Universe Online is several years old, the game still has active development and plenty of updates to keep content fresh. If you’re a big DC fan and enjoy MMORPGs, then DC Universe Online is a good freebie. Also check out some other free MMORPGs if DC isn’t your thing.

Feeling a bit blocky? Trove uses the voxel art style of games like Minecraft (our latecomer beginner’s guide), but offers it in MMORPG form.
In Trove, players can take up the mantle of several different class types. Each has its own distinctive play styles and abilities. There are 15 classes to pick from, with more added through updates. For example, the recent Megalithic Update brings the Dino Tamer class, Jurassic Jungle biome, and craftable classes for full customization.
So what exactly is Trove? It’s a sandbox MMORPG, so you can pretty much do whatever you want in it. Thus, it’s almost like Minecraft: the possibilities are infinite.
Play Your Way
If you feel like having an adventure with friends, just venture forward and battle monsters and discover epic loot and treasure. Want to relax? Go around exploring and see what you can find. Feeling creative? Build your own world and show it off. There’s a ton of player-created content that you are able to check out too.
Despite the overall freedom of Trove, you do have to make some linear progress before it becomes your oyster. You’ll have to go out and do some quests for experience points to level up, because the portals in the central hub have certain level requirements. This is important, since those portals are key to exploring other worlds and realms.
While there’s a ton of lootable items to find in Trove, the game has some quirks that keep the action interesting and challenging. For example, certain equip items can only be obtained by defeating hostile NPCs. There are also nine rarity levels for items, so the quest for the best gear almost never ends. Plus, with three crafting professions, there’s always something to do.
If you’re like me and like the visual style of Minecraft, but want something more, then Trove could fill that void. It’s not a bad option to consider, especially since it’s free.
