Sound Sunday is a weekly feature promoting free album downloads. This edition is packed with different flavors of rock. My personal favorite this week is The Undeserving’s Almost Alive, which is followed by punk and harder rock albums, before slowly easing into more poppy rock.

The Undeserving – Almost Alive
Genre: alternative, rock, piano rock, pop
From their Facebook page: “Since their formation in 2005, The Undeserving’s music has taken them far beyond the boundaries of their quaint NW Ohio town. Shortly after they signed to Warner Bros. Records the band joined Secondhand Serenade on part of their American tour. In 2010 The Undeserving released their first single.
The small town band experienced huge success in the media with their hit single Something to Hope For. The song has been heard across television sets: on the ad campaign for Season 9 of American Idol and throughout its season, So You Think You Can Dance, The Biggest Loser, and the CNN Red Cross special for the Haiti Relief Effort. (…) Something To Hope For and There For You are featured on The Undeserving’s debut album, Almost Alive, which released on September 6th, 2011. The album was mixed by Michael Brauer (previous clientele include: Coldplay, John Mayer and The Fray). Almost Alive has a euphonic and melodious pop/rock feel that nods to bands like Keane, Snow Patrol and early Coldplay.”

Non Ultra Joy – Disclaimer
Genre: alternative, indie, rock, AOR, classic rock
From their Facebook page: “(…) basically, Non Ultra Joy is what happened when John Girgus (Aberdeen, Spider Problem), Chris McRitchie (Flupejac, Big Stone City) and Dave McKay (Driveblind) decided to get together and play in the early part of 2010 in Los Angeles. Initial beer-fueled rehearsals saw the trio covering Bad Motor Scooter by Sammy Hagar’s Montrose, Game of Pricks by indie-rock heroes Guided By Voices and Midnight to Six Man by 60’s garage rockers the Pretty Things.
With such stellar musical signposts to lead the way, the band quickly honed their sound while co-songwriters Girgus and McRitchie swapped instruments as well as lead vocal duties. By March, after a few live outings to test the waters, Non Ultra Joy called upon producer Dave Newton (The Little Ones, the Soft Pack, the Henry Clay People) to record the band’s debut EP. You should be listening to the results right now.”
