Facebook Live for Everyone, Microsoft Surface Phones in Works… [Tech News Digest]
Three versions of Microsoft Surface phone reported to be in the works, Facebook Live is rolling out for everyone, Ikea’s new VR showroom spares you a trip, Todoist arrives on Windows 10, and this hidden camera geo-blocking spoof will show you exactly what it’s like to be European on the internet right now.
Facebook Live for Everyone
After offering Facebook Live just to celebrities to begin with, Facebook are finally rolling out the Facebook Live feature to everyone. This means you will now be able to share video live from your mobile phone with your Facebook friends, and receive comments and reactions while you’re filming.
Reactions to Facebook Live videos will actually show up in the video in real-time, so the person filming can get an idea of what parts of the video the audience liked best. People watching the broadcast later will also see the reactions as they happened, so it will feel much like Periscope replays in that respect.
To draw on a little bit of Snapchat and Instagram’s success, Facebook live also offers Live filters, so you can write on your video or just make yourself look better for your audience.
This is also being extended into other areas of Facebook. You’ll also be able to go live from Facebook Groups and Facebook Events, so performers might me able to give a sneak preview backstage before a gig. Plus Facebook will be introducing a hub for videos, in an attempt to be more like YouTube.
Microsoft Surface Phones in Works
Sources close to Microsoft have said there is unlikely to be a ‘Surface Phone’until early 2017, but that there are at least three different models being designed.
The three ‘Surface Phone’ models look to be a matter of offering different pricing tiers for different markets. We can suppose that will include devices for each of the following groups: Regular consumers, Business, Pro Enthusiasts.
Speculation on what a ‘Surface Phone’ might entail is murky, but our best guess is that it will involve a great deal of pen technology, due to the recent Microsoft-Wacom partnership to build the Universal Pen Framework (UPF)m and the latest Surface Pro devices .
Microsoft’s full plans are still a little unclear, but it looks as if the Lumia line is going to be phased out. There are no new Lumia releases due, and no rumors of their release either.
Ikea Have a VR Showroom
If getting to your local Ikea showroom is too hard, now you’ve got a lazy way to see the goods in your own home. Ikea have decided to make a kitchen showroom using virtual reality technology.
The app was built using Steam, and works with the HTC Vive to deliver your VR experience. You can try out different finishes, open drawers and put a frying pan on the stove, and even change your height to see how each member of your family will find the kitchen.
There’s also a teleport function you can play with. Go on, try it.
Even if you don’t have the HTC Vive, you can find the Ikea VR Experience app for free on Steam, so you can take a look at the rest of the promo pictures to get a feel for it.
Todoist Launches on Windows 10
Windows 10 productivity experts will be excited to note the Todoist has finally gone native, with an official Windows 10 Todoist app recently released. It’s been designed specifically for Windows 10 PCs, but works equally well on Windows phones and tablets.
This modern take on the Todoist app incorporates every feature Todoist fans love , such as the collaborative task management, but with the style of a native Windows 10 app. The Windows 10 Todoist app offers offline access and real-time sync across 10+ other platforms.
Get hold of your copy of Todoist for Windows 10 now. Seriously, why wait?
Hidden Camera Geo-Blocking Spoof
And finally, if you’ve ever been frustrated by geo-blocking, you’ll love this hidden camera prank that highlights exactly how dumb it is. The European Consumer Organization made this in an attempt to #stopgeoblocking, because it is pretty damn annoying to be told “Yeah, unfortunately we can’t sell to Italians. I’m so sorry”.
It’s so galling because it’s true.
