Know Your Enemy: 5 Types Of Online Gamer You’re Guaranteed To Encounter

Dave Parrack 18-10-2012

types of online gamersIf you’re a gamer in this day and age then you’re probably an online gamer. You may remember the days when you’d play by yourself or with friends in the same room, but those days are long gone. Mainly because multiplayer is the main focus of many modern video games, with the single-player campaign or story modes starved of attention by developers eager to please the hardcore fans.

Assuming you play online then you’re guaranteed to have met certain types of online gamer. It’s unavoidable. There are a wide range of them out there, but they can all be pared down to just five main types (and their opposites).

You can try and ignore them, but they’re there regardless, plying their trade as an annoying n00b, an incessant talker, a quiet quitter, a tiresome cheat, or an unwilling team player. Know your enemy by learning who they are before you head online.

The n00b

The n00b is a term that has leaked into the mainstream, but it originated in online gaming. This is the person that’s completely new to the game, likely having entered the multiplayer without having first acclimatised themselves with the controls of the game offline.

They will wander about achieving nothing but annoying their teammates and opponents. They’ll ask inane questions, they’ll make mistakes, they’ll generally make nuisances of themselves. All of which could be avoided by learning how to walk before attempting to run.

Their Opposite: The Veteran… They have seen and done it all, and will dismiss anyone who isn’t on their level. Just don’t expect them to pass on any tips to help you on your way.

The Talker

The talker is pretty self-explanatory. It’s as though the world wouldn’t have provided them with the capacity to talk to other people if it didn’t want them to share every inanity that sprang to mind. So they do, constantly and consistently, even when told to shut the hell up.

Talkers comes in different varieties. There are those who are nice enough but just have verbal diarrhea, there are those that talk trash to put off their opponents, there are even those that insist on singing along to whatever music they have playing in the background.

Their Opposite: The Mute… They either don’t own a headset or are reluctant to talk into it. Which is fine for most games, but not for those that require teamwork.

The Quitter

The quitter is the most annoying online gamer of all those mentioned here. The video demonstrates the art of quitting perfectly, with numerous examples of gamers leaving without a trace as soon as the going gets tough. They don’t even say goodbye, which is just rude.

We previously listed videos of one man rage quitting 8 'Rage Quit' Videos Guaranteed To Make You Laugh [MUO Gaming] I'm a gamer, and like all gamers I have particular tastes. I have adored some video games through the decades, and would count playing them as highly memorable experiences. I have also played some games... Read More various games, all done in the name of entertainment. But it happens for real too. People quit because they can no longer cope with the griefing/cheating/douchebaggery on display. Which is understandable.

Their Opposite: The Stalker… They won’t quit, even when you ask them to do so. Instead they think you’re their new best friend, so expect to have to spurn their non-sexual advances.

The Cheat

The cheat comes in all shapes and sizes. You have those who simply take advantage of their environments or the quirks of the game, by camping on high ground or spawn-killing new players, and then you have those who go out of their way to gain an unfair advantage.

This is achieved by employing a cheat or hack 10 Best Comprehensive Websites to Go to for Game Cheat Codes Video games are challenges in themselves; it’s just that cheat codes make them more interesting. From 8 bit games of old to today’s massively multiplayer online games and even Facebook games like Farmville, cheat codes... Those of us who don’t cheat will never be able to understand the logic of those that do, so don’t even try.

Their Opposite: The Stickler… They know the rules and are keen to see they’re followed at all times. You can call them names if you want but they will have heard them all before.

The Soloist

Warning: Video Extremely NSFW

The soloist is a lone wolf, playing by their own rules and refusing to let anyone else into their personal space. Most online games now feature at least some modes where teamwork is the key to success. But soloists would rather do things their own way, thank you very much.

This type of gamer can be sneaky, coupling with you when it suits them before dropping you like a stone as soon as they feel like it. Betrayal is an accepted weapon in their arsenal, sitting comfortably alongside the machine guns and sniper rifles they invariably employ.

Their Opposite: The Leader… They either have few friends, or have a job with zero responsibility. No matter, as gaming gives them the opportunity to lead, something they’ve always craved.

If you already play video games online, then let us know your experiences with these types of opponents. Does one of the types mentioned bug you more than the others? Have you been guilty of any of the above sins yourself? If you are new to online gaming then heed the warning… you will meet these types of gamer, it’s just a matter of when. And how you choose to deal with them when you do. I personally disappear quietly. And go and read a book.

The only one I do is the N00B one. I don't actually bother people by it but I jump straight to Online Multiplayer before Single player. I hate quitters, theres also The I am sortof a Natural though cause most games I play I can handle the controls really good the only one I'm bad at is flying Helicopters in BATTLEFIELD TM. But I hate when you start a co-op game and there's you and 1 other person they leave halfway through the game.

What about asian gamers?! You didn't mention them!
YOu know what they say..."It doesn't matter how good you're at something, there'll always be an asians who performs it better"

I am of the mute variety. I have enough trouble focusing on what I'm doing, arguing with a trash talking twelve year old serves no purpose.

I despise the hackers/cheaters more than anything, the noobs I am usually sympathetic to and try to help because hey, we were al noobs at one time right?

I suppose I am guilty of being a lone wolf and a mute, a mute mostly because my kids were being loud in the background and I didn't want to disrupt the game like the talkers.

Started online gaming with Bolo then went crazy with all the Tom Clany series to COD's to BF Bad Company 2.

Hahaha nice topic, i personally hate quitters, others are like a temporary disease...noobs can get better with time, talkers will get tired in time if no one cares about what they say...i'm kinda a soloer in some games, that kind of person that just wants to play the best i can, but sometimes i'm just "casual-gaming" so it doesn't matter if i play bad...and at the same time, sometimes when others play bad if just bad luck, others may just be feeders...
Anyways, gaming is fun, lets leave it at that, cause overstressing by gaming i personally think is not worth it.

It is a term used to describe people who do not like gay people, and shows less respect on both sides for the name caller and the person expressing contempt at others way of life.

This is the reason why competitive online games are so annoying. But yet I still love them. Guild Wars 2 and Dota 2, please!

    I hate quitters too.
    Another type of gamer which partly goes with Noob and Veteran;
The Natural Gamer - This person can intuitively pick up a new game and can run with it from the word go. They effortlessly fly round new maps and work out strategies and use weapons with ease. They can handle all forms of vehicle whether on land, air or space. Secretly we would love to be them, even though we are a bit jealous. Some are brash and boastful about their skill whereas others don't show malice and are the nicest people you could know.
Of course the opposite is the Unnatural Gamer. However hard they try, (and they do try!) they just never get the hang of gaming. its like they are in awe of the natural gamer but just don't have, and never will have, such skill. Bless 'm they do try!

I hate natural gamers. Purely because I'm not one and it makes me jealous of their skills.

yeah my buddy hates me for that exact reason. i dont care what the game day he was like i know ill beat you in tetris!(i mean i havent played that game since Dr. Mario.....)and he had been playing it on his Wii a LOT....long story short yeah he didnt beat me in it either....or the first time i played halo at a friends party...told them i had never touched an xbox(it was true), but told them as well that give me a round to get used to the controls and i would win....first match i lost, badly. second match...i won, 3rd i dominated...4th....what do you mean no one wants to play any more? awwwww....i mean i honestly cant think of a game i didnt do that too my friends on...n64 goldeneye? yeah you loose. n64 super smash brothers? first match i went 3v1 and won....idk i just get games for some reason in ways others that have been playing dont. add in that i love to talk shit and its no wonder why my friends dont play video games with me any more....the only exception to that was halo 2 while i was in the navy, all the people that played also liked to talk shit so we had a blast. I remember at one point people were complaining about my color scheme(you only killed me because you blended in!) so i changed my profiles color to hot pink everything. one guy asked why i made my character hot pink. i said "so you dont have the excuse of i didnt see you" which got me a few laughs....and then lots of kills. good times.
