Here are all the game releases you need to know about! Read More . The first Destiny was an absolute smash hit, and Bungie has only improved on the original formula. The sequel is set up for a huge launch.

And if you want to play it, it’s time to start getting ready. Whether you’re a Destiny veteran or a total newcomer to the series, you’ll enjoy the new release more if you do a bit of preparation first.

Review the Mythology

If you played hundreds of hours of Destiny, you probably think you know everything about the story. But unless you’ve spent a crazy amount of time reading, re-reading, and debating the particulars 3 Sites (and One App) to Complete Your Destiny Experience If you're willing to risk a few more minutes (or hours) of time lost to Destiny, here are four places to supplement your experience. Read More , you probably don’t. Players criticized Bungie for making it really hard to figure out what’s going on from the game alone, but no one can say they didn’t put a whole lot of thought into a fascinating story.

Before you fire up Destiny 2, it’s time to get reacquainted. This 90-minute video from My Name is Byf is thoroughly researched, packed full of story, and exquisitely narrated. Whether you’re an expert or just starting, it’s a must-watch. 90 minutes is a lot, but it’s a lot faster than trying to sift through Grimoire cards.

If you want a more concise version of events, Arrekz’s Destiny Lore Index will get you caught up in 15 minutes.

Arrekz also has a preview of the Destiny 2 story, if you’re interested. But if you want to go in with no idea of what you’ll see, skip it!

Another option is Destiny Timeline, a great project that lets you read through the history of the entire Destiny universe. It’s not as detailed as Byf’s video, but it does start much farther back, and gives you an idea of the universal forces that are play. You’ll learn about the Fundament, the Ahamkara, the Great Worms, and other ancient races and figures that inform modern events.

Get the Basics Down

New players to Destiny probably have an idea of what they’re getting into, but understanding the gameplay basics before you get started will still prove helpful. Polygon put together a helpful video that covers classes, sub-classes, weapons, engrams, game types, and everything else you need to know about actually playing the game:

There’s even some good information in there for experienced players. The three classes from the first game are the same, but there are some awesome new sub-classes to look forward to.

And if you want to see some of these put into practice, there’s a 50-minute-long video of the Destiny 2 PC beta to check out:

Because this was the beta, you don’t have to worry too much about spoilers. Download the Companion App

The Destiny companion app doesn’t have great reviews, but it’s a fun way to stay connected with the game. The newest version of the app lets you read news, join clans, chat with your clan members, check out your gear, and find a fireteam if you’re looking for more people to play with.

In Destiny, the companion app was a great way to get more information on the lore of the universe. It seems likely that Destiny 2 will follow suit. So if you want to immerse yourself in the mythos, you’re going to want the app. And with Bungie’s ever-increasing emphasis on social play and clans, this will definitely become a useful tool.

There are a few aspects of the app that, at the time of this writing, aren’t totally functional yet. Join a Clan

Speaking of which, you should join a clan. If you’re already part of one from your Destiny days, great. If not, it’s time. Find a group of friends that play, and use Bungie’s clan hub to group up. This will make it easier to find people to join you for strikes and raids.

Destiny 2 Is Near: Here's What You Need to Get Ready destiny clans

If you don’t know a lot of people who play Destiny, that’s fine, too. There are lots of clans that are open to new members, and many of them pride themselves on being welcoming places for new players to learn more about the game.

A Strangers Call, for example, explicitly states that they’re open to everyone, regardless of experience or skill level. The Silent Light is a group of people who don’t like to or can’t use their mics (which is great for us introverts or people who have had bad experiences with finding players online). There’s even a clan for deaf Destiny players. No matter what you’re looking for, there’s a clan out there.

You certainly can play without a clan. You could play the entire game solo, in fact. But if you do, you’re going to find it harder to find a group of six for the raids. And that’s where Destiny really gets awesome. Find a relaxed clan, or start your own, and get ready to rock.

Practice Your Skills

This only applies to players of the first Destiny. If you can, spend some time re-familiarizing yourself with the controls, attack timing, and other little quirks about how the game actually plays. You’ll get back in the swing of it quickly. Don’t forget that there are some super fun challenges 8 Must-Play Challenges That Keep Destiny Interesting Even if you've been playing Destiny since the day it came out, there are probably still a few things you haven't done. Try one of these adventures to keep it fresh. Read More that you might not have finished yet, too.

You could wait until you play Destiny 2 to get the hang of it again, but why not hit the ground running even faster? There are still tons of people hanging out in the Crucible, and you can hone your skills against them while you impatiently wait for the sequel. You can always take on more PvE missions, too.

Make sure you appreciate all the awesome gear you’ve collected, too, as none of it will be coming with your character to D2. Your characters will transfer, but they’ll come in with no gear.
