Finding yourself on too many social networks? Moving your photos to a better Instagram alternative? If you’ve decided that you’re done with Instagram, you can either temporarily disable your account, maintaining your followers, images, comments, and likes — or you can just do away with it all and delete your account once and for all.
How to Deactivate Your Account
If you would like to temporarily disable your account, you will have to log in to Instagram on a mobile or desktop browser. This cannot be done through the iOS or Android apps. Click on the profile icon on the top right-hand corner and go to Edit Profile. At the very bottom of the screen, click on Temporarily disable my account at the bottom of the page.
You will be prompted to enter a reason for disabling your account, and will have to enter your password. All your photos, comments, and likes will be hidden from the social network until you reactivate your account.
You can log back into your Instagram account at any time to reactivate it.
How to Delete Your Account
If you’d rather completely delete your account, you will have to go to the Delete Your Account page in a mobile or desktop browser. Deleting your account cannot be done through the iOS or Android apps. Again, you will have to choose from one of several options explaining why you are choosing to delete your account. These include trouble getting started, created a second account, and too many ads. You will have to enter your password in order to delete your account.
If you choose to create an account again at a later stage, you can re-use your email address, but cannot re-use that username.
