There are plenty of ways to create a digital shopping list that you can take with you to the grocery store, but none more convenient than using voice commands with your Android phone or Google Home device.

How to Create Lists With Voice Commands

A primary shopping list is created automatically when you add an item to your list using Google Assistant on your phone or Google Home. Just use a voice command like: "OK Google, add [milk] to my shopping list."

While you can create lists using your voice, you'll have to check items off manually in the Google Home app.

  1. You can open your shopping list by just saying: Ok Google show me my shopping list or you can fire up the Google Home app, tap the menu (hamburger) button and tap Shopping list. (If this doesn't appear in your main menu, tap More Settings > Services > Shopping List.)
  2. Tap the check box next to the item you want to mark off.

How to Create Lists Using the Google Home App

While you can have several shopping lists in your Google accounts, you'll have to create additional lists in the Google Home App. And you can only add items to one shopping list - your primary list - using voice commands.

To create a list, open up Google Home on your phone:

  1. Tap the Menu (hamburger) button.
  2. Under Google Assistant, tap Shopping List. You'll be prompted to open a new window in Chrome.
  3. In the Window that opens up, tap New List.
  4. You can enter the name of the list, and optionally, make that list your primary list.

How to Share Lists With Google Assistant

If you want to share your list with contacts, you'll again have to fire up the Google Home app:

  1. Tap the Menu (hamburger) button.
  2. Under Google Assistant, tap Shopping List. You'll be prompted to open a new window in Chrome.
  3. Tap the shopping list you want to share. (You can also just use the voice command, Ok Google show me my shopping list if you're going to share your primary list.)
  4. Tap the Share (profile) icon.
  5. You can scroll through your Contacts to add them to your shopping list, or manually enter their email.
  6. Tap Save.

They'll receive an email inviting them to join your shopping list, after which they can add or remove items from the list. And while you're at it, there are plenty more Google Assistant voice commands and IFTTT recipes worth giving a try!
