If you own a lot of ebooks, Calibre is a fantastic piece of software. It lets you manage your library, send books to your e-reader, and even remove DRM from books you have bought from online stores. If you're not sure where to begin, check out our extensive guide.

But Calibre also has another nifty trick up its sleeve: it can automatically convert any ebook into the MOBI format when you import it into your library.

What's so special about the MOBI format? Well, it's the best format to use if you want to send ebooks to your Kindle device. Kindles can't read the widely-used EPUB format, while other formats they can read -- such as DOC, PDF, and HTML -- are subpar and tend to have rendering issues.

How to Convert Ebooks to Kindle MOBI

If you own a Kindle, it makes sense to convert ebooks into the MOBI format as soon as you add them to your library. That way, you won't be waiting around for conversion jobs to complete when you want to send an ebook to your device in a hurry later on.

Setting up the automated conversion process takes two steps.

First, you need to make sure MOBI is your preferred output. Open Calibre and go to Preferences > Interface > Behavior.

In the left-hand panel, locate Preferred Output Format and select MOBI from the drop-down menu. Click Apply when you're ready.

For the second step, you need to return to the Preferences menu, but this time head to Import/Export > Adding Books.

On the new window, select the Adding Actions tab and mark the checkbox next to Automatically convert added books to the current output format. Hit Apply to save your changes.
