There are plenty of photo editing and sharing applications on iOS. There are apps to make you fat, apps to make you look like a zombie and apps that will give your picture that hipster look and feel we all seem to love oh so much. Just a quick peek on the photography section of the App Store will show you that it is a breeding ground for some of the dumbest photo applications in the history of humankind.

However, they are not all asinine, some are actually very awesome. Apps like Camera Awesome, Instagram (though hipster-ish) and ProCamera have really impressed my co-workers at MakeUseOf.

The app I am going to look at today is called VFX Studio, and while not nearly as serious as some of the other photo apps we have looked at in the past, it is certainly awesome in its own right. It allows you to take your photos and make them look like something directly out of a Michael Bay movie (he makes crazy action movies, if you are unaware).

Set Up a Fun Photo Editor

Getting everything up and running with VFX Studio is incredibly easy. You simply need to download the app from the iTunes App Store by searching for it, or clicking this handy link right here. It costs 99 cents in the US app store and 79 cents in European app stores.

When you run the app for the first time, it will jump you right to a screen where you can select "camera" to take a new picture or choose an existing one from your camera roll. Pick one of those options and you will be ready to start making some ultra ridiculous pictures on your iPhone.

Editor

Using this fun photo editor is incredibly easy once you get the hang of it. You start by clicking on the symbol on the bottom left side of the screen. From here you can click “add fx” to choose from the giant list of cool effects for your picture.

The effects are broken down by category. You can choose from things like animals, bullet impacts, fire, lasers, makeup, scars and more. Each category includes a slew of effects for your enjoyment. For example, under bullet impacts there are bullets impacting with glass, flesh, concrete and metal. This allows you to choose the effect that will make the most sense with your picture.

Once you pick an effect for your image it will pop up over your picture, ready to be fine-tuned. You can move it around by clicking and dragging on it. You can change the size and rotate the effect by clicking on it with two fingers and pinching or rotating.

You can also tap the button on the bottom right of the screen to change all kinds of properties about the selected effect. You can adjust the orientation, opacity, hue, brightness and more. You can also use this area to clone an effect so you can add more than one if you need to. This menu can be used to delete an effect if you do not think it fits in with your design.

As you edit your images, you may find that you have too many effects for it to be manageable. If this happens, you can click the bottom left button and click “flatten.” This will make it so the effects are no longer editable and it will also make it so you cannot accidently click on them.

Once you are done playing with your image, you can click the bottom left menu button and click “save.” This will flatten the image and save it to your device's camera roll.

The one problem with the app is that it doesn't work as well with images that are oriented vertically, so try to stick with editing horizontal images. It will still edit them just fine, but when it exports the image to your camera roll, it will be sideways. This can be easily fixed using any photo editor that rotates your image.

Conclusion

While this might not be the best camera app on the iPhone, it is certainly one of the most fun photo editors. I spent an excessive amount of time doing stupid stuff to my photos when I should have been writing this article. If you like taking your photos and making them ridiculous, this is the app for you!
