There’s a lot of ways Silicon Valley technology has been harnessed for charitable good, but did you know that you could also automatically be supporting the charity of your choice just by shopping on Amazon? The little-promoted service, Amazon Smile, makes it possible to make a small difference as you do your online shopping.
When you first launch Amazon Smile, you’ll have a chance to choose the charity you would like to donate to. You can select from one of the spotlight charities featured including the American Red Cross and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or you can enter the charity of your choice. If you want to choose a different charity, just search for the name or location, and you can pick from the options that appear.
Once you’ve selected your charity, just be sure to go to smile.amazon.com every time you shop and 0.5% of your purchase of eligible items will go toward that charity. The interface will be identical to Amazon.com except that eligible items will be feature a label informing shoppers.
You can also keep track of how much you’re contributing to Amazon Smile. After you’ve set it up, you should see a new link that indicates which charity you’re supporting underneath the search bar. Hovering over it will pull up a window with a link that reads Your Amazon Smile impact.
If you want to select a different charity after your initial selection, just go to Your Account and under Settings choose Change your charity.
According to Amazon, the program has seen over 32 million dollars donated to charity.
