out of milk appNo doubt you’ve done this before: You found a spare moment to duck to the shop, but now you can’t recall whether it was shampoo or conditioner you needed. And do you even know which spices you had run out of anyway? Well, rather than buying everything just in case that was what you needed to get, it is actually possible to get organised using a very cool little Android app.

Out Of Milk Shopping List looks a little like a regular to-do list, and indeed can be used as one if you wish, but it really excels at looking after a shopping list for you so that you’re certain of what you need to buy every time you walk into a shopping centre. It doesn’t take very long to set it up and it can easily be shared with other users, so everyone in the family can be up-to-date and prepared to buy groceries.

The Out Of Milk Shopping List application is available for free from the Android store. You can sign up using the application or the website using Facebook, Google or your own login.

Importing Or Creating Shopping Lists

Using either the website or the Android application, you can then start to build your default shopping list. The website is particularly useful if you previously used another application or a spreadsheet to manage your shopping lists. This is because it has import functions of .csv files for each type of shopping list, which makes it easy to set up if you already have a list.

Personally, I also prefer typing on a real keyboard to the phone, so I much prefer to set up new lists using the website. Whatever you do on the phone or website is synced to the other in real time anyway.

The item entry allows you to add prices of each grocery, so you can keep track of your likely spend for each shopping trip. Note that if you’re entering an item by weight, for instance by kilogram, then you will need to enter the unit price for a whole kilogram. If you like, you can also note whether you have coupons for each item you enter.

Using The Lists

While you’re out shopping, it’s very easy to refer to your shopping lists using the application on your phone and mark off things you’ve got in your trolley. If you have entered prices, the Out Of Milk Shopping List will also keep track of how much it would cost to buy the remaining things on the list.

When you’re checking your pantry later on and repopulating the shopping list, simply go to the “Manage Product History” option and you will see every item you have previously had on the list. You can then very quickly click “Add” on any item you’ve now run out of.

Sharing Lists

If you have a partner or teenagers who help with the shopping, it’s useful to be able to share these lists. Not only will you all be able to keep the grocery list up-to-date, but when someone is at the supermarket they can cross off the items they are buying and the list will update for everyone at once.

In order to make list sharing as easy as possible, Out Of Milk Shopping List is currently beta testing an iOS application. So, soon it will be very easy to share lists with the whole family, no matter what phone they have.

While there are many different to-do list applications available for both the web and your Android phone, this app is designed specifically with grocery shopping in mind and they have done a great job of making your shopping trip as easy to coordinate as possible. Give it a try and tell us what you think!

Have been using this app for awhile now. Love it. I have it on my PC, my tablet and my Phone. All are linked together so if I think of something I need to get or do, one of my devices will be available. Sure helps in this busy world and a fading memory.

I love this app! Especially the scan feature. I've tried a few other apps for both groceries and to-do lists, but I like this one the best so far.
I once forgot to charge my phone, and had to take a paper list with me the next morning - my toddler thought that was VERY strange! He likes to help me "check off" the items as we shop.

Great with iOS and Android but I also what it for computers or at least web. Noticed that with Wounderlist we use at the moment that I tender to rather take a check/att things at the web than phone when I'm working in the office

Hey Mac, you can use the web and it will even sync with the app on your phone. The author comments on use of the web here:

"Personally, I also prefer typing on a real keyboard to the phone, so I much prefer to set up new lists using the website. Whatever you do on the phone or website is synced to the other in real time anyway."

I sit at a computer all day and making lists is much easier from the web while I am in mid-thought. I use it for reminders, wish lists, shopping, To-Do's, and some notes.

With a few less features - you can do this with dropbox and a text or word file. Still, the point of a dedicated app is a tighter solution - I might give this one a go, it looks worth the upgrade.
