If you’re on a Windows 8 device, there are better ways to surf Reddit than just through your Internet browser. ReddHub offers a wonderful free Reddit experience with a quality modern user interface.
Getting started is as easy as downloading the app from the Windows Store and signing into your Reddit account upon first opening it. If you’re unfamiliar with Reddit, you may want to check out our awesome guide to Reddit and learn about how cool Reddit is.
ReddHub takes a nice two-paned approach to the interface, allowing you to scroll through articles/photos on the left while they appear in full on the right. Below you can see the left pane. Unread posts appear with black text, whereas viewed posts appear with greyed out text. You can choose how to sort them and have a small options menu under “More”.
Tapping on “frontpage” or the down arrow beside it will bring up the menu shown below, covering up the entire left panel. This is a list of subreddits that you can personalize to your heart’s content. Find a random one, search for one, rearrange them, pin them, whatever you want. It makes it easy and simple to switch between subreddits.
The right panel will show the image or article or AMA (Ask Me Anything) — whatever you’re looking at. Below, you can see the upvote and downvote arrows in the top right, as well as an options button with all sorts of additional features.
Ads do appear occasionally unless you shell out $3.99 in-app for the ad-free version, but the ads were few and far between for me. They sometimes appeared for one post, but then disappeared when I would move on to another. I didn’t find it distracting at all, and it didn’t seem to interfere with the experience.
Options And Settings
Swiping down at any point in the app will bring down a blue bar from the top with options for your messages, profile, and the option to submit a post.
Swiping in from the right to access the Charms menu, then tapping Settings, will present you with ReddHub Settings and Baconsync Settings. If you use Baconsync to sync all your Reddit info across devices, it will work with ReddHub. Tapping ReddHub Settings will bring you to the menu shown below.
Thankfully, it offers a few theming options, as well as plenty of other options as you scroll down, like filtering out NSFW posts or auto-playing videos. It’s that level of customization that made me prefer ReddHub over the alternatives.
ReddHub, like any good Windows 8 app, can be snapped to the side for use alongside another app. The difference is that some apps are still stuck on old Windows 8 coding, automatically shrinking into a narrow bar when snapped, whereas ReddHub follows Windows 8.1 guidelines and is adjustable through a range of sizes.
As you can see above, ReddHub easily shrinks to fill half the screen, all the while maintaining the same two-panel interface. If you move the divider until ReddHub takes up the smallest portion of the screen allowed, only the left panel will be displayed, and the app will need more screen real estate to open anything, or it can open all the links in Internet Explorer.
You can download ReddHub from the Windows Store where it currently has a 4.6/5.0 rating with over 2,400 reviews. Not bad!
Looking for some content to enjoy on Reddit? Well, the site has plenty to offer. They’ve hosted some amazing AMAs and have some fascinating subreddits, as well as some more interesting, yet obscure subreddits.
