10 Best Lego Video Games: Star Wars, Marvel, and More

Everything is awesome. Bricks are bigger than they've ever been before, and everyone loves Lego. Well, almost everyone. But if you need your Lego fix but don't fancy idly sticking bricks together or slavishly following the manual, what do you do?

Well, you fire up your game console, mobile device, or PC, and enjoy a Lego video game! Over the years, we've seen many Lego games released. They're incredibly popular, and often quite funny. But with so many Lego games available, you may be unsure which one to choose.

Fortunately, we've played most of them. We think the following ten Lego video games are ones you should take a look at.

1. Lego Dimensions (2015)

Released on all consoles in 2015, Lego Dimensions is a massive game that you can extend even further with the addition of expansion packs.

The starter pack features the toy board, a USB device that connects to your device of choice, plus three minifigs. Beyond this, there are three "story packs" (featuring a new gateway) and 10 "level packs" (which add new levels from the associated franchise). You can also buy 10 "team packs" (essentially character collections) and many more "fun packs" (smaller versions of the team packs). Some of these expansions are better than others.

By the time of the game's cancellation in 2017, characters and environments from over 30 franchises had been featured in the game. Notable inclusions are Doctor Who, Ghostbusters (both movie versions), The Goonies, Fantastic Beasts, and Back to the Future.

2. Lego City Undercover (2013)

Criminals are at large in Lego City, so it's up to you, as Chase McCain, to go undercover and bring them to justice. Mixing the open world, vehicle-hopping fun of the Grand Theft Auto series with the Lego City toy franchise, the only difference is that this time, you're a good guy.

One of the best games of 2017, Lego City Undercover has a superb two-player mode with plenty of side missions to complete and moves to learn along the way. Developer Traveller's Tales has created many Lego video games, and over the years it has improved the co-op modes and split screen. Thus, team play is one of the most satisfying elements of the game. The main mission, meanwhile, is to save Lego City from total destruction at the hands of an insane criminal mastermind. Who would want to miss that?

Originally released in 2013 for the Wii U, the original version of the game is sadly single-player only. However, it cleverly employs the Wii U GamePad as a scanner and communicator. Lego City Undercover was re-released in 2017 for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

3. Lego Jurassic World (2015)

Combining the first three Jurassic Park movies into one big storyline with the first Jurassic World movie, this bundles all of the expected Lego video game fun into a dinosaur-heavy experience.

With puzzles to solve, you can easily get bogged down trying to work out what are usually simple conundrums. As such, multiplayer mode is a good idea!

Delivering lots of humor (character deaths in the movies are ignored), Lego Jurassic World is 20 levels (five per movie) of fun. Most satisfying is when gameplay switches away from the standard third-person sideways view, usually when your character is in a vehicle. Shooting at dinosaurs from the back of a jeep is particularly good fun!

You'll find Lego Jurassic World available for all current platforms, and a handful of older ones. Android and iOS gamers can try the similar Lego Jurassic World.

4. Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga (2007)

Ever wanted to pit Luke Skywalker against Darth Maul? No, of course you didn't.

But just in case you did, Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga is the game for you. Guiding you through the first six chapters of the Star Wars movies (it was originally released as two games, one for each trilogy), this is a fun game that includes the usual TT Games humor. With plenty of secrets to uncover and bricks to collect, you'll soon find that some characters are better than others at specific tasks.

For instance, The Complete Saga managed to find a use for Jar Jar Binks -- he's great at jumping. As such, you need to use him from time to time. Similarly, you might employ Leia over Luke as she has a grappler. And R2-D2 always comes in handy!

Meanwhile, all the bad guys are here too: Jabba the Hutt, Darth Vader and Maul, Emperor Palpatine, Count Dooku... and, um, Jar Jar Binks. It's great fun, only let down by the lack of voice artistry. No need to let that get in the way of enjoying The Complete Saga, though! The Lego Star Wars toy franchise is huge, as you're probably aware.

You'll find versions of this game for prior console generations. As an old title, you'll need to look for it in the usual bargain bin websites and offline stores. Prices vary wildly, depending on platform. For mobile users, you'll find it is still available for Android and iOS (unlike most other mobile ports of the Lego games).

5. Lego Worlds (2017)

Minecraft fans will find much familiar about Lego Worlds. But here, the blocky 8-bit cuteness is replaced by minifig magnificence, as you play in your own Lego sandbox! Using the brick-by-brick editor tool, or pre-defined structures, you can build an entire world of Lego. Although this isn't the first Lego sandbox (the first was in 1998) enthusiasts have been crying out for a Lego-flavored Minecraft rival for some time.

As with pretty much every Lego game (including the ones not listed here), you can earn bonuses by collecting objects around the map. Meanwhile, if all of this self-building wonder wasn't enough, several DLC packs are available already! While Lego Worlds has a long way to go to supplant Minecraft, it is at least giving you the real Lego building experience in a video game -- something fans have long been asking for.

6. The Lego Movie Videogame (2014)

It's time to say a big hello to Emmet and Wildstyle and enjoy the video game tie-in to the phenomenal Lego Movie!

Yes, everything IS awesome, and in this game you can even take control of President Business himself, committing dastardly deeds to further his insidious plan. As with the movie, there are two character classes: Regular Builders and Master Builders. This introduces some progression for Emmet, who begins the game as a Regular Builder before stepping up in the later game -- just as in the film!

Although released to some mixed reviews, the Lego Movie Videogame is standard Lego gaming fare. If you're looking for a Lego game and enjoyed the movie, you'll love this.

7. Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)

Leia! Han! Chewie! Luke! The Force Awakens was a stunning cinematic return to form for the Star Wars movies after a 10-year break from movie screens, and the Lego video game of the same name is no different. Finn, BB8, Poe, Rey and Kylo Ren are all here, waiting for you to play.

Expanding on some of the characters and scenes of the movie (as Lego video games usually do), this is a great sequel to Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga. If you've played that, you'll love this -- and it comes with voice artistry!

Available for the the current console generation as well as the last, Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a great Star Wars game and a great Lego game.

Meanwhile, a free mobile version (with in-app purchases) is also available for Android and iOS.

8. Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes (2012)

The second of three Batman-themed Lego video games is the best of a top bunch, with the Caped Crusader given an open world to explore. You'll also find other characters from within the Batman universe (and outside) that you can control.

Along the way, you'll meet Lex Luthor, the Joker, a mild-mannered reporter from Metropolis, and many other characters. These include Robin and Batgirl, and features a mass breakout from the Arkham Asylum. Sure, you've heard the plot before, but it's never been delivered with such mischief and fun!

Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes is a lot of fun, with plenty of that Lego-flavored humor.

9. The Lego Ninjago Movie Video Game (2017)

A tie-in with the most recent Lego movie, the elaborately-titled gaming experience is a great attempt to bring the world of the movie to life. You'd expect nothing less! Like the movie, the game follows Lloyd, Cole, Jay, Zane Kai, Nya, and Master Wu, who must protect their homeland from the vicious Lord Garmadon. He has an army of sharks to do his bidding, and has a connection to one of the heroes...

Ninja-gility is the secret to the game. Can you master your character's collection of moves? If so, this will improve your experience of the game, and make completion far more satisfying. This is a bit of a diversion for Lego games (the nearest we can think of is the Jedi characters in the Lego Star Wars series) but it works really well.

10. Lego Marvel's Avengers (2016)

Most of these Lego video games are movie tie-ins, and our final entry on the list is no different. Lego Marvel's Avengers doesn't just feature levels from one movie, however. Instead, there are levels inspired by the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe (as of 2016). Prepare yourself, then, for levels from the two Avengers films, as well as Captain America: The First Avenger, Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Along the way, you'll encounter (and control) a massive collection of characters, such as Iron Man (and War Machine), Captain America, Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Thor, Ultron, Loki, Winter Soldier, Falcon, and Vision. Characters from the Marvel comic universe are also included, with over 200 playable characters in total! Various DLC packs have been released too, with Ant-Man and levels based on the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D TV series added to the main game.
