Now that Chrome OS supports Android apps, you should only buy a Chromebook with a touchscreen. And not just that, make it a 2-in-1 hybrid or convertible. These are your best choices for that.

Generally, 2-in-1 laptops come in two types. The first is a hybrid, where the screen detaches from the keyboard to act as a tablet. The second is a convertible, where the screen flips over completely.

Unfortunately, hybrid Chromebooks don’t exist yet, so your only choice is a convertible. And in those convertibles, make sure you get a 360-degree hinge for the screen, don’t settle for a 180-degree hinge. The 360-degree hinge will allow you to flip the screen completely, making it come as close to a tablet as possible.

So I went hunting and came back with a list. Here are the best touchscreen 2-in-1 Chromebooks, ordered from highest price to lowest.

Google Pixelbook

Google Pixelbook (i5, 8 GB RAM, 128GB) (GA00122-US) Google Pixelbook (i5, 8 GB RAM, 128GB) (GA00122-US) Buy Now At Amazon $839.99

  • Storage: 128GB SSD (can be upgraded to 512GB SSD)
  • Ports: 2 USB-C ports, no standard USB ports, microSD card slot
  • Buyers Should Note: None

This is Google’s definition of what a Chromebook should be like. The Pixelbook sports an aluminum unibody with a strong hinge. It’s powered by a Core i5 processor, which is strong for a Chromebook.

The Google Pixelbook also is the only Chromebook right now to support Google Assistant for voice commands. There is a separately-sold Pixelbook Pen stylus as well for drawing.

You can probably get a MacBook or Surface Pro Google Pixelbook: Worse than a Microsoft Surface or MacBook Pro? Google Pixelbook: Worse than a Microsoft Surface or MacBook Pro? The Pixelbook checks many boxes for people spending $1,000 on a thin-and-light notebook. But how does it compare to Apple and Microsoft’s offerings in this price segment? • Memory: 4GB RAM
  • Storage: 64GB eMMC Flash Memory
  • Ports: 2 USB-C ports, no standard USB ports, microSD card slot
  • Buyers Should Note: Hinge becomes slightly loose with age

The Asus Chromebook Flip C302 is, simply put, the best overall Chromebook to buy today. The fact that it’s a Chromebook 2-in-1 just makes it better. When it comes to the balance between price, performance, and features, no other laptop comes close.

The Flip C302 has excellent all-aluminum build quality, long battery life, and wonderful performance. The touchscreen is fantastic too. The only thing you need to know is that the hinge of the screen becomes slightly loose with age. But it’s not a deal-breaker at all, and can be tightened at an Asus service center for a nominal fee.

ASUS Chromebook Flip C302CA-DH54 12.5-inch Touchscreen Convertible Chromebook Intel Core m5, 4GB RAM, 64GB Flash Storage, All-Metal Body, USB Type C, Corning Gorilla Glass, Chrome OS ASUS Chromebook Flip C302CA-DH54 12.5-inch Touchscreen Convertible Chromebook Intel Core m5, 4GB RAM, 64GB Flash Storage, All-Metal Body, USB Type C, Corning Gorilla Glass, Chrome OS Buy Now At Amazon $626.99

The most popular version of the Flip C302 uses the Intel Core m3 processor. But if you want a little more horsepower, get the version with m5 processor for an additional $150. It’s a big leap, but so is the performance.

Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 11e

best chromebook 2-in-1 convertible laptops

  • Screen: 11.6-inch touchscreen, 1366×768 pixels
  • Processor: 2.2GHz Intel Celeron N3450
  • Memory: 4GB RAM
  • Storage: 32GB eMMC Flash Memory
  • Ports: 2 USB-C ports, 1 USB 3.0 port, microSD card slot
  • Known Issues: Sacrifices performance for ruggedized body

The Lenovo ThinkPad series is known for taking the bumps of daily life without flinching, and the Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 11e lives up to that legacy. It received several durability certifications, including MIL-STD-810. As such, it can survive bumps, shocks, and drops.

The other claim-to-fame of the ThinkPad series is the fantastic keyboard these laptops have always served. The mechanical keys on the Yoga 11e feel excellent while typing. Plus, the keyboard is water-resistant to protect it from splashes.

What goes against it are the low-resolution screen and the underpowered processor. You need to decide what’s more important for you: a rugged body, or performance. The ThinkPad Yoga 11e is for those who want a sturdy laptop.

Also consider: The HP Chromebook x360 11 G1, which is similarly ruggedized. But it costs more for the same features, so it doesn’t make much sense unless you have a brand preference.

Samsung Chromebook Plus

Samsung 12.3" 2-in-1 Convertible 2400 x 1600 WLED Touchscreen Chromebook Plus - OP1 Hexa-core 2.0GHz, 4GB RAM, 32GB eMMC, Bluetooth, Webcam, 10hr Battery Life, Chrome OS- Pen included Samsung 12.3" 2-in-1 Convertible 2400 x 1600 WLED Touchscreen Chromebook Plus - OP1 Hexa-core 2.0GHz, 4GB RAM, 32GB eMMC, Bluetooth, Webcam, 10hr Battery Life, Chrome OS- Pen included Buy Now At Amazon $519.00

  • Screen: 12.3-inch touchscreen, 2400×1600 pixels
  • Processor: OP1 Hexa-core Processor
  • Memory: 4GB RAM
  • Storage: 32GB eMMC Flash Memory
  • Ports: 2 USB-C ports, no standard USB ports, microSD card slot
  • Known Issues: No Intel processor, no backlighting for keyboard

The Samsung Chromebook Plus is among the best Chrome-powered laptops ever made. It has an excellent build quality that beats its price tag. Plus it has an ARM processor so Android apps will run perfectly on it.

This OP1 processor is made for Chromebooks, so don’t worry about compatibility. But in terms of sheer horsepower, the Asus Chromebook Flip C302 and Samsung’s own Chromebook Pro have better performance. The OP1 is good, it’s not good enough for this price.

The 2016-2017 Samsung Chromebook Pro was an excellent laptop with an Intel processor, but Samsung doesn’t seem to make it anymore. And the successor for 2018 will feature an AMD processor, not Intel.

Acer Chromebook R13

Acer Chromebook R 13 Convertible, 13.3-inch Full HD Touch, MediaTek MT8173C, 4GB LPDDR3, 32GB, Chrome, CB5-312T-K5X4 Acer Chromebook R 13 Convertible, 13.3-inch Full HD Touch, MediaTek MT8173C, 4GB LPDDR3, 32GB, Chrome, CB5-312T-K5X4 Buy Now At Amazon $379.21

  • Screen: 13.3-inch touchscreen, 1920×1080 pixels
  • Processor: Quad-core MediaTek MT8173C CPU
  • Memory: 4GB RAM
  • Storage: 32GB eMMC Flash Memory
  • Ports: 1 USB-C port, 1 USB 3.1 port, 1 HDMI port, microSD card slot
  • Known Issues: Not a powerful non-Intel processor, no backlighting on keyboard

A large screen and more ports than any of the top-rated Chromebooks make the Acer Chromebook R13 a unique value proposition. That full USB 3.0 port can make a huge difference for users, especially office workers and students who exchange data off USB flash drives. Look, USB-C ports are great, but it’s convenient to get a full-sized USB port and not need a converter.

The Acer Chromebook R13’s major issue is the processor. MediaTek is a reputed company for Android phone and tablet processors, but that prowess doesn’t translate into a great laptop CPU. The MT8173C is good enough for browsing and other such tasks, but if you’re a power user who likes to multi-task, you’ll feel the lack of speed.

HP Chromebook x360 11

  • Storage: 32GB eMMC Flash Memory
  • Ports: 1 USB-C port, 1 USB 3.0 port, 1 HDMI port, microSD card slot
  • Known Issues: Bad screen, no backlighting on keyboard

It bears the same name as the rugged Chromebook by HP, except for the “G1” part. But it costs half as much for the same specifications. If you’re that worried about dropping and breaking your laptop, you could literally buy the regular HP Chromebook x360 11 again for the same price as the rugged G1.

From this Chromebook x360’s price and below, you can’t go by the specifications alone. There are other issues in these laptops, which is why they cost so little. This one, for instance, has a screen that isn’t particularly pleasurable to watch movies on. Colors aren’t accurate, and it doesn’t even support multi-touch input.

When you’re buying a budget laptop, you should be ready for such sacrifices though. After all, you get what you pay for Are Cheap Laptops a Good Deal or Waste of Money? Acer Chromebook R11

best chromebook 2-in-1 convertible laptops

Acer Chromebook R 11 Convertible, 11.6-Inch HD Touch, Intel Celeron N3150, 4GB DDR3L, 32GB, Chrome, CB5-132T-C1LK Acer Chromebook R 11 Convertible, 11.6-Inch HD Touch, Intel Celeron N3150, 4GB DDR3L, 32GB, Chrome, CB5-132T-C1LK Buy Now At Amazon $260.00

  • Memory: 4GB RAM
  • Storage: 32GB eMMC Flash Memory
  • Ports: 1 USB-C port, 1 USB 3.0 port, 1 HDMI port, microSD card slot
  • Known Issues: Not a powerful processor, no backlighting on keyboard

The Acer Chromebook R11 is a solid budget laptop for students. It is loaded with all the right ports to share data or connect to monitors, TVs, and projectors.

The only real issue with the Chromebook R11 is the processor. The Intel Celeron N3150 is optimized to extend battery life, not to give you good performance. While battery life is important, what’s the point if your entire machine is running slow after that?

Don’t Go Below This

While the Celeron N3150 isn’t particularly powerful, consider it the cut-off point. At this price, I would still recommend the Intel chipset over competing ARM-based processors instead.

Chromebook 2-in-1s at this price with a Rockchip or MediaTek CPU, like the Asus C101PA, will give you the same battery life for even worse performance. They’re just not worth it as everyday computers.

If you want to buy a cheaper Chromebook, forget about the touchscreen and the 360-degree hinge.

You should never, ever recommend any laptop with a 1366x768 screen. There are several listed here and that makes the entire list suspect.

Interesting that all the Chromebooks have opted to go usb-c completely, foregoing on the larger usb 3.x port. Adapters and dongles everywhere... They all generally agree on measly storage too. It's like they get together in a single room and decide to sabotage the hardware in some way.

With both Android and Linux app support, maybe we'll begin to see more Chromebook hardware that isn't crippled in some way.
