There's a new Deus Ex game out and it's amazing! Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is a futuristic cyberpunk game, the sequel to 2011's Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and it's relatively similar in terms of gameplay and variety. Human Revolution was an amazing game that we recommend to anyone, though we didn't really care for its mobile companion The Fall.

But if you are coming to Mankind Divided with no prior experience with the Deus Ex series, then there are a few things you should know before you begin playing. These tips will help you experience the game to the fullest.

There Are Always Alternatives

The beauty of the Deus Ex series is that there is rarely a single way to an objective. Depending on the mission and enemies, you could kick down the front door and perforate everyone. Or you could sneak unseen through the ventilation system and never encounter another human being in the entire mission.

If you ever encounter a situation in Mankind Divided that you're not equipped to handle, or you simply don't want to handle, just poke around for a bit and you'll find another way around. You might find a sniper vantage point, an abandoned corridor that leads around the issue, or a door that lets you flank the enemy. Picking other approaches can completely change the game, and the game rewards you for using your wits.

You Never Have to Kill Anyone

Considering a listed achievement on the PS4 version mentions that it is possible to complete a playthrough without once killing anyone, I don't think I'm spoiling anything when I tell you this is possible.

Within the first few minutes of the game, you are given the option to go either lethal or nonlethal. If you choose nonlethal, you will be given weapons that put your enemies to sleep rather than kill them. Since you're not locked into whichever one you choose at the beginning, use this section to try the nonlethal approach and see if you like it. If you don't, you can always buy lethal weapons later.

Beyond this, you will usually have the option to handle situations without weapons. In Human Revolution, you could use social augs to talk people down from confrontation, and that's true of Mankind Divided as well. So invest in a social aug and choose your dialogue carefully.

Augs Are Important

As tempting as it may be to rely on your gunplay skills the entire game, you will be missing out if you don't use Adam's mostly-mechanical body to its fullest. So focus on leveling up his artificial augmentations, or "augs," as much as possible, and be selective about which augs you develop.

In the prologue, Adam has most of his augs turned on, meaning that you can use multiple augs you won't be able to use until later. The most useful ones in this section are Smart Vision, Glass-Shield Cloaking, the Icarus Landing, and the Rebreather.

After the prologue, Adam's augs will be deactivated, meaning you have to use praxis points to get them back. The aforementioned augs are the most generally useful, along with any aug that boosts your hacking ability. Beyond that, choose whichever augs suit your style of play. Which brings me to . . .

Pick a Playstyle and Stick with It

While there are multiple approaches to take in most situations, and the game will not fault you for switching your approach when you like, remember that upgrade resources are finite. This means that, assuming you don't use the in-game microtransactions, you will only be able to get so many augmentations and weapon upgrades.

So it's probably worth it to focus your resources on the upgrades that are best for your style. There are some upgrades everyone needs -- the hacker augs spring to mind -- but other than those, you should spend points on things you're going to use, whether it be fancy gun upgrades or stealth augs.

Hack Everything, No Exceptions

For someone who derisively refers to his allies as "hacktivists," Adam Jensen certainly has a lot of hacking skills himself. Hacking in Deus Ex -- unlike what we usually see in popular media -- is a complex minigame where you must capture points in order to bypass security measures. Doing so can unlock new routes and let you access lots of extra stuff.

Just hacking itself will get you extra XP, so it's a win all around. The only downside to hacking everything is that if you try to hack something beyond your level, you are more likely to be detected and set off alarms. This is another reason it's good to invest in hacking augs.

Do Sidequests or Else

Sidequests (any quest that is not part of the main story mission) are everywhere in the world of Mankind Divided. They flesh out the story and characters, grant you more experience, and show off the in-game world, so not playing them means you do not experience the game to the fullest.

If you do not do some sidequests before you begin the next big story section, you will not be able to do them at all. There is no penalty for taking your time before you begin story missions, so feel free to wander around and do other things. In fact, this is the surest way of getting the XP you need to get most of the good augs.

Melee Takedowns Are Almost Too Good

If you are able to maneuver Adam close to an unaware enemy, you can activate a stealthy takedown in either lethal or nonlethal varieties. It works on almost any enemy, sometimes two at once in the right conditions, and it's guaranteed to take them out of the fight for good.

Takedowns will alert enemies if you do them within their cones of vision, but if you don't, then you are almost guaranteed a silent kill (despite the fact that some of these are gruesome enough that someone should hear them). The attack also cannot be interrupted, meaning you can't be injured during it. While this does absorb a lot of your energy -- meaning it can't be spammed indiscriminately -- it's a good shortcut for stealthy players.

Beware of Pre-Order Bonuses

We talked about the terrible "Augment Your Pre-Order" campaign that began months ago for Mankind Divided -- and was swiftly cancelled when the backlash hit. But it seems that the publishers can't stop messing around with pre-orders, because it has since emerged that all pre-order consumable items (meaning money, ammo, and upgrade points) can only be used for a single playthrough.

This means that these items you paid for will only be available for one save file. You can use them once, and then never again for the rest of the time you play Mankind Divided. So if you did pre-order and you have those items, be aware that you'll never get them back once they're gone.
