Begin Football Season With College Football Radio & Live Scores for iOS [Giveaway]

Tim Brookes 03-09-2012

I don’t know an awful lot about American football, and truth be told I prefer my balls to be round than oval shaped. Saying that, I’d like to think I know a good app when I see one regardless of subject matter, target audience or whether I understand the finer points a sport that isn’t hugely popular in any country I have ever lived in.

College Football Radio & Live Scores ($0.99) is quite a long name for an app, and a fairly descriptive one at that. You can be sure that it will deliver both streaming radio and live scores for your favorite US college football teams – but what else do you get and is it any good? If you’re a fan of stateside college football then read on for the full review. We’re also giving away 25 copies, so join the giveaway if you’d like a chance to grab this app for free.

Radio & Live Scores

As the name suggests, College Football Radio & Live Scores (which I will now refer to a CFR, because you’ll be sick of seeing the full name by the end of this article if I don’t) is a $0.99 app that is first and foremost an eye on the hugely competitive and popular world of college football which played a pivotal role in the USA’s adoption of the game in the late 19th century.

The app itself separates the action across four tabs, only three of which you’ll ever really use (the fourth being an Info tab with an email address which you can use to contact the developers). The other three are:

  • Schedule which is where you’ll find details of upcoming, in-progress and finished games.
  • Teams provides an overview of all competing teams.
  • Favorites is an area in which to bookmark your favorite stations.

Much of the action takes place on the Scheduled tab, which separates Live, Scheduled and Final games and lets you navigate back and forth in the season to see who’s playing when, while keeping tabs on last week’s scores. It’s a simple affair that operates much like the iOS calendar. Scores appear next to the games in this tab, with a refresh button in the top-right to manually check for developments. Tapping a game (live, upcoming or finished) will provide you with a list of local radio stations relative to that tie, for both teams.

Streaming works as expected, though I did notice that if I wanted to stop a current stream I had to return to any list of radio stations in order to access the pause button. Radio will continue to play in the background if you minimize the app to do something else, though you’ll have to either kill CFR or return and hit pause if you want to stop the stream. Radio streams are not just limited to game times, which makes the app a local radio player as much as a college football radio streamer.

Team Listings & Favorites

If you’ve got a shortlist of teams you’d like to follow then you will appreciate the ability to peruse the list and search on the Teams tab. Tapping a team will bring up a list of relevant radio stations that you can bookmark (using the star button) for later use, handy if you’re getting ready for a big game and don’t want to mess about later.

Thankfully the Favorites tab doesn’t just provide you with a big list of radio stations but separates each added station by team. This means you don’t have to memorise radio station call signs and relate them back to teams in your head. Judging from the Info tab the developers welcome input and requests, so if you know of a radio station that’s not included then a simple email should go some way towards helping the developer further improve the app.

There’s very little else to say about CFR, it’s a specialised little app that doubles as a local radio streamer and the perfect tool for following your favourite college football teams. For $0.99 you really can’t complain, though you might be able to grab yourself a completely free copy in our giveaway, below.

The developer also has a Pro Football Radio & Live Scores app going for $0.99, which you may also be interested in if you’re more into professional football.

It is only aimed at the US in terms of coverage, but if you like US college football then the app will work regardless of where you are in the world. I used a code for this review, and I'm on the UK AppStore - so it should be good in other countries too.
