Convenience Before Freedom: How Tech Companies Are Slowly Trapping You [Opinion]

Computers were once under our control. We could run any software we wanted on them, and the companies that manufactured the computer had no say. Today, computers are increasingly being locked down. Apple and Microsoft rule over their app stores with an iron fist, deciding what we can and can’t do with our devices. We live in a world where changing an iPad’s default web browser or email app is a crime.

An Apple (Ad) A Day: Top Ten Commercials You’re Likely To Remember

Apple is a company that you either love or hate; there's very little middle ground. This is because you either buy into the company and its culture or reject it outright. Seeing as I don't own a single Apple product I guess I belong to the latter group. However, even I, as a supposed hater, have been exposed to Apple's marketing machine over the last three decades. And while the ads haven't persuaded me to buy anything from the company, some have left a lasting impression.

The 11 Years Of The iPod [INFOGRAPHIC]

I can fondly remember my first iPod. I was a late entrant to the whole Apple craze, and after years of owning crappy MP3 players that broke down constantly and had bad sound, I decided to take the plunge and buy an iPod. At the time, it was one of those big white chunky ones with the spinning wheel in the middle and to me, this thing was revolutionary. I ended up listening to more music than I had ever listened to in my entire life.

Dodgy MacBooks & Scratched iPhones: Is Apple King of Customer Support?

Misplaced brand loyalty – or brand disloyalty as it sometimes manifests itself – is a game I gave up on long ago. Speaking from experience, buying or ignoring a certain company’s products “just because” without duly considering the real pros and cons is a mug’s game. Apple have arguably one of the best regarded customer service records of all large-scale technology manufacturers. Of course there are horror stories.

Instant Inspiration: Watch Steve Jobs' Greatest Ever Speeches

Not everybody is a fan of Apple. Nor was everybody a fan of Steve Jobs, one of the two Steves who founded the company, and the one who turned it from an also-ran into the cash-gobbling behemoth that it is today. However, even those who dislike Apple and who disliked Jobs felt his passing, and also miss his style of delivery whenever he made a speech. The speeches below are arguably the greatest ever made by Steve Jobs.

10 Of The Best Apple Tumblrs You Must Bookmark

You may have noticed that there is a huge appetite for Apple news, views, and rumors on the Web. No other company comes close to having as many headlines written about it or as many articles penned about it and its products as Apple does. While not everyone is a fan of Tim Cook and his merry band of Cupertino geniuses, even those who don't own a single Apple product cannot help themselves getting drawn in.

How To Take Advantage Of Your Widescreen Apple Display [Mac OSX]

I didn't realize until I unpacked my 27" iMac just how much screen real estate I had to work with. Sure, it looked large in the store, but opening numerous applications and windows on it, stretching out the Dock with more apps, and slightly tilting my head up to look at the menu bar made me realize even more just how much space I have to work with.

7 Funny iPhone 5 Videos Apple Fanboys Will Hate

Unless you have been living under a rock for the past month you'll know that Apple recently unveiled the iPhone 5. It did so in its usual inimitable style, wowing the press with showmanship and hype. Unfortunately the product itself didn't live up to that hype or warrant the showy reveal. It is essentially just an iPhone 4S with a slightly bigger screen. Still, that fact didn't stop millions of Apple fanboys buying up the latest iDevice.

8 Essential Twitter Accounts for Apple Fanboys

I’m not an Apple fanboy myself but I do know a few. They don’t deserve the treatment they receive, and have done throughout history. They’re still human, and still people who need love and attention just like everybody else. A Genius may be able to fix their iPhone without even trying, but they won’t provide the hugs these people will inevitably need on occasion. You know, like when they cannot afford the new new iPad on day one.

Keeping Shop - A Look At Apple's In-Store Retail [INFOGRAPHIC]

When I was a boy, my mother always liked to tell me that money didn't grow on trees, but if I was a boy today, I would tell her she's wrong and point to Steve Jobs as the proof. That man knew how to literally grow money simply by sticking a logo of an apple onto a computer and then onto retail storefronts. Apple is today the most valuable public company in the world, worth over $400 billion. That's a lot of iPhones and iPads.

10 iPhone Fun Facts [INFOGRAPHIC]

After several months of owning an iPhone, I am still learning new things about it every day, things I never realised I could do with it. For example, did you know you can make phone calls with it? That is utterly amazing. Here I was thinking that an iPhone was only good for checking email and updating Instagram, and suddenly it rings and someone is talking to me at the other end! Absolutely amazing technology.

4 Apple OSX Interface Elements That Really Annoy Me [Opinion]

Contrary to popular belief, I'm not a Apple fanboy. I don't think I need to make excuses for advocating Apple as I have been known to do on occasion, but regardless, even us so-called 'fanboys' detest some of the nonsense that Apple comes up with. Here's 4 user interface elements from OSX that really irk me.

Why Apple Should Release A Mini iPad [Opinion]

There have been numerous rumors of late concerning Apple's plans to release a smaller version of the iPad. In fact, there have been similar rumors ever since Steve Jobs first stood on stage and unveiled the original iPad. And yet Apple is still not ready to talk about this product that may or may not be in the pipeline.

The Big Cash Of Apple [INFOGRAPHIC]

The fact that Apple is rolling in mountains of cash is hardly a newsflash. Just weeks away from bankruptcy15 years ago, it is now the most valuable company in the world with revenues that could sustain small nations or help to wipe out the US national debt. But you may be shocked to learn the extent to which Apple is rolling in the Benjamins. Even I did a double-take.

8 Ridiculous & Inconsistent Apple App Store Guidelines [Opinion]

Here’s a radical opinion - you should be able to run any apps you like on the devices you own. Apple doesn’t agree, and it’s twisted itself into pretzels creating arbitrary rules for what app developers – and you – can do with your device. These guidelines – although Apple reserves the right to change them at any time – are actually an improvement over the past situation.

Why You Should Never Queue For New Gadgets [Opinion]

I personally cannot fathom the mindset of people who queue for the latest gadget on launch day. I've tried, I really have, but I think it's a bizarre choice to queue up for hours or even days, through all weathers, purely in order to purchase a next-gen device in person. There is absolutely no need to ever queue for a new gadget on day one as, the Internet means queuing is unnecessary.

Why Apple (Like Everything Else) Can't Keep Growing Forever [Opinion]

There's no question about it: Apple's had an amazing decade. It's hard to recall, but it's only been ten years since Apple was just starting to sell a lame MP3 player with no wireless and less space than a nomad and only five years since mainstream tech writers predicted the failure of the iPhone. Today hardly anyone in the press doubts Apple. They're the largest company on earth by stock value.
