For anyone with a compatible iPad, the Apple Pencil is pretty much a must-have accessory. The Apple-designed stylus is perfect for everyday note taking and more creative tasks like sketching or drawing.
Today we’re highlighting seven Apple Pencil accessories to make the stylus even better.
What About the Second-Generation Apple Pencil?
Just to note, all of our accessory choices are for the first-generation Apple Pencil that is compatible with every iPad Pro except the 2018 version. It’s also compatible with the 2018 iPad.
The second-generation Apple Pencil sports a substantial redesign. Only compatible with the 2018 iPad Pro models, the stylus magnetically attaches to the side of the tablet to pair and charge. Because of the integrated charging system, at the time of writing, there are no accessories available for that model.

One of the most maligned features of the Apple Pencil is how it charges. After removing the easily-lost cap, you’ll find a male Lighting connector. Apple intends users to charge (and pair) the stylus by inserting it into the Lighting port of the iPad. A male-to-female Lighting cable adapter that often goes overlooked or lost is also included with the Apple Pencil.
So in practical use, neither of those options make a lot of sense.
Thankfully, there are a number of charging accessories available to make that chore much easier. A great all-around choice is the TechMatte Apple Pencil Charger/Stand. Sporting an Apple-like aluminum build, the dock comes with a built-in cable for any standard USB port.
When the Apple Pencil needs a charge, just insert the Lightning plug into the dock. There’s even a spot to store the cap. Even if your stylus doesn’t need to be charged, just placing the tip into the cap hole means it’s ready to use at a moment’s notice.
After using the Apple Pencil for any amount of time, you’ll probably notice two other issues. The stylus is made from slippery material that may be difficult to hold in your hand. And because of its circular design, the stylus can easily roll off a flat surface like a desk with just a single push. But those issues will stay in the past with the Catalyst Grip Apple Pencil Case.
The case is easy to put on the Apple Pencil and made with easy-to-hold silicone that can absorb shock. Its triangular shape will help the stylus stay wherever you put it. Along with an included spot for the Lightning adapter, Catalyst also includes a carabiner so you can attach the stylus and case to a backpack or purse.
If you use a magnetic iPad case like the Apple Smart Keyboard, Apple Smart Cover, Apple Smart Folio, and others, TwelveSouth has a great solution. The PencilSnap holds an Apple Pencil and uses magnets to attach to those cases. You can also use it as a standalone case for the stylus.
Made with genuine leather, the case is available in black or camel.
When on the go, it’s always a good idea to have a way to safely transport the Apple Pencil along with your iPad. The Belkin Stand + Case does that and more. The fabric-lined case can hold an Apple Pencil, Lightning adapter, pencil cap, and extra pencil tip in individual storage compartments. Magnets help keep the cover stay on tight when traveling.
It can also act as a stand for the Apple Pencil. Just put the tip of the stylus into the built-in tip holder.
If you want to take the Apple Pencil name more seriously, the Toast Real Wood Cover is for you. The one-piece skin wraps around the stylus and makes it look a little more like an actual pencil. There are four different colors made from sustainable wood: walnut, ash, bamboo, or ebony.
The PencilCozy Apple Pencil Cap Holder takes a simple approach to wrangling the small but important piece of the stylus. You’ll insert the cap into the holder, which then attaches to the body of the Apple Pencil. Whenever you need to remove the cap for charging, it will always be just a few inches away.
You can select from two different colors for the cap holder. The white version blends in with the Apple Pencil, while a glow-in-the-dark version can help you find the stylus in a bag or at night. As a nice bonus, the cap holder will also help keep the Apple Pencil from rolling away.
Instead of needing to choose whether you’ll charge your iPad or Apple Pencil, the Dreamvasion 2-in-1 Cable offers a perfect combination. Along with a usual Lightning plug, the cable also sports a built-in Apple Pencil charger. The cable is made with nylon braid for durability and to protect from tangles. It’s available in black or silver.
