Your Android Phone or Tablet Won’t Turn On? 6 Ways to Fix

Dan Price Updated 23-11-2018

Every smartphone owner’s worst nightmare is trying to fire up your phone and finding that nothing happens. Your phone won’t turn on. A black screen with no sign of life spells disaster.

What are the reasons your Android phone or tablet might not turn on? Let’s have a look at some causes and solutions.

1. Charging Issues

android charging with stop watch

As is frequently the case, the most obvious cause is usually the correct one.

If you haven’t noticed any sign of your phone malfunctioning previously, the problem might be a simple as a lack of juice in the battery. More often than not, that traces back to charging issues.

Check Your Connections

Firstly, check the obvious points. Did you definitely remember to charge your phone? Has the charger become partially dislodged from the wall socket? And is the power socket turned on?

Dirt and Dust

Next, ensure there’s no dust, dirt, or other gunk clogging up either the USB port on your charging cable or your phone’s charging port.

Remember, the connections are delicate. The best way to remove grime from ports is to use a can of compressed air.

Troubleshoot Your Cable

USB charging cables are notorious for malfunctioning on a whim. You can check the integrity of your cable by using it with another device and seeing if it works. If it doesn’t, you can buy an AmazonBasics USB cable.

We’ve covered some of the best charging cables for Android if you’d like to explore other options.

2. Perform a Power Cycle

We’ve all experienced a frozen phone. The screen is unresponsive, and none of the buttons work. But did you know that it’s also possible for a phone to freeze in its powered-off state?

If your Android phone won’t turn on, one solution is to perform a power cycle. For devices with a removable battery, it’s as easy as taking out the battery, waiting a few seconds, and putting it in again.

If you don’t have a removable battery, press and hold the device’s power button for several seconds. Depending on your manufacturer, you might need to keep it held down for anywhere between 10 and 30 seconds.

3. Check Your Battery

If you’re confident that your charging equipment is working, and a power cycle hasn’t solved your problems, it’s time to turn your attention to your phone’s battery.

Most phone and tablet batteries start to rapidly decline in quality after a few years of use. Eventually, they will completely die. Other types of damage can also irreparably affect the battery. Liquids, falls onto hard surfaces, and extreme temperatures can all render a battery useless.

Check the Battery Is Receiving Power

After you have plugged your phone or tablet into your charger, wait for one minute to see whether the battery icon pops up on your screen.

If it does, your battery is fine, and you can move onto the next steps. Alternatively, you might see a small red (or other color) light flashing. If you do, it means your battery doesn’t have enough power to turn on or display any content on the screen. Let it charge for 30 minutes, then try again.

Don’t see a battery icon or a light? That might mean that your battery is dead and needs replacing.

If your phone has a removable battery, you can pick up a new one on Amazon for a decent price. For phones without removable batteries, you either need to try to pull apart your phone and change the battery yourself or take it to a specialist shop.

Be aware that if you try to change the battery yourself, you might void the device’s warranty. If you’d like to check the health of your Android battery Is Your Android Battery Healthy? 4. Check the Screen

Of course, your phone might be powered on without you realizing. A broken screen can give the impression that there’s no power.

Thankfully, it’s easy to know whether your screen is to blame. Hold the Power button for 30 seconds to ensure your phone is definitely powering up, then wait for at least two minutes to allow the boot process to complete.

Now, simply call yourself from another phone. If the phone rings, your screen is to blame. If it doesn’t, you need to keep going.

Remember, you can replace the screen yourself, but once again, you will void your warranty.

5. Use Your Computer to Troubleshoot

If you still can’t get your device to boot, you might be able to force it to turn on using your computer. Google provides a somewhat convoluted series of steps that you can work through. We’ve simplified them below:

  1. Connect your phone to your computer using a USB cable.
  2. Let it charge for 15 minutes.
  3. Disconnect the cable from your device (not the computer).
  4. Reconnect the cable within 10 seconds of disconnecting it.
  5. Charge your device for a further 30 minutes.
  6. Press and hold the Power button for five seconds.
  7. Tap Restart on your screen.
  8. If you don’t see Restart, hold the power button for a further 30 seconds.

6. Reset Your Android Device

Perhaps your device will turn on, but cannot make it past the boot process to your home screen. A corrupted upgrade or a custom ROM could be to blame. In this case, you can try to reset your device.

Warning: Resetting your phone or tablet will wipe everything on it. To reset your Android phone using Recovery Mode, follow the steps below:

  1. Press and hold the Power button and Volume Down for a few seconds until you see the Android logo on the screen. (This key combination varies with some manufacturers.)
  2. Use the Volume Up and Volume Down keys to navigate to Recovery Mode.
  3. Press the Power button.
  4. Use the Volume keys to select Wipe Data/Factory Reset and press the Power button.
  5. Finally, select the Yes—Erase all Data option and press the Power button.

The reset process will take several minutes to complete.

I would like to sincerely and deeply thank you and the existence of this amazing website for helping me solve my mom's dead phone. Number 6 point 1 did it for me, but with the combo of Power + Volume Up (instead of Down). We're not financially capable enough right now to just get a new phone or replace the battery, so this simple trick was honestly a life-saver. Thank you again.

Ok, so I guess I am the only one who has run into this problem bc I can't find anything on the internet/youtube to address this. While taking a road trip my Nextbook Ares 11.6 tablet got plugged into the wrong cord. The cord it got plugged into was for my portable oxygen machine that is a much stronger output. Now the tablet won't boot up. I spoke to a programer friend and he suggested I remove the battery and allow it to drain but due to the copper tape on the back the best I could do was disconnect it. Has anyone removed a battery for one of these? Do you know where I could purchase the copper tape? I have another battery from a parts tablet just held up by the copper copper tape panel on the back side. I would welcome some fresh ideas as I have a lot of stuff on this tablet I would like to save.

While my phone was charging (Battery level 70%) I unlocked it to respond to a quick text and all the sudden the phone turned off without notice. I tried to power it back on by holding down the power button, but that did not work. I then tried to preform a hard reset on the phone, but that yielded no result. It has been 2 days scince the incident, and whenever I try to charge the phone the back area near the camera heats up to an uncomfortable level so I have stopped trying to charge it out of fear of damage. I have had the phone for about 2 years, I have never dropped it, the phone has never been in any contact with any liquids. Any ideas on why my phone is refusing to turn on?
    Please help me,thank you.

I had to hold my power button down for 20 to 30 seconds. So thankful when it came on. Wish I knew why it happened but glad to have help from on line google thru my cell phone to find out what I could try first before getting in car & running to Verizon my carrier where I bought it at. Not something I wanted to do on my Saturday. Lol. If someone knows reasons why this happened in first place would sure like to know. Thanks!

Some time power button is also broken and even on pressing it. Signals were not send.
Dust, carbon & moisture also cause the tablet to break down.
Corrupt OS can also cause it.
Broken circuit also do the harm. In case of these problem it can be easily fixed at home by seeing the tutorial video on YouTube.

I had the same issue. I tried the power cycle, charging it and everything. I even tried the recovery mode and factory reset. I also wiped the cache. Nothing worked. Then I flashed the firmware. It worked. Not sure if that'll work on your phone.

following experiment is not be repeated(unless... )

i had tegra note 7 (nvidia/xolo). i wasn't using the tablet for few days(probably got switched off because of the low charge ). When i put it on charging, there was no charging animation. After an hour in trying switching it on, nothing happened. Then I started searching internet and came across this site.

The battery of tegra note is non removable and soldered directly on to mother board unlike nexus 7(1st gen), so removing battery was out of question. Then i tried pressing the power as recommended, nothing happened. neither did the recovery mode .

So i opened the back panel and checked the battery voltage with multimeter, it showed 3.17V. Connected the usb charger and checked (with charger connected) , it showed the same voltage again. I then connected the tegra note battery with an external power supply(4.9V, 2A.. directly) and boosted the voltage till 3.3V.... connected the usb cable... charging animation is back... and device booted after 5 min ..
    Happy ending :-)

I wake my Samsung Galaxy S4 by pushing the menu (home?) button. It's easier than the power button with the case that I have. I currently have Android 4.3 but it also worked on 4.2 when I purchased the phone in November. Nobody ever mentions using that button on a S4, I wonder why.

My previous post does help illustrate the ever getting better spell check on all of these devices,,,, the first "is" was meant to be "os" for operating system.... The second "is" was meant to be "it"......????

    • Mary from Brooklyn

Spell check is not the answer. Grammar check or possibly even proofreading it is.

Have had this happen with iPad touch, iPhone4 & iPhone5s... The apple devices seem to like to be sync'd via USB cable... This has worked to un-brick these apple devices.... The iPhone is excellent technology... Although I find the is to be old and limited... I do highly recommend is as a good smart phone for beginners....

Asus TF300 - Happened once. Tried a lot of different combinations to get it to boot. I thought I was dead in the water. As per Asus online support ... long-press Volume Up + Power at the same time until screen comes on in a recovery mode. It took extra time for boot up but at least it worked!

Make use of the one year warranty from the manufacturer if that is still applicable, secondly I would be very careful in using third party to fix my item. Lastly, I never trust service providers warranty as they are useless.

My HTC one, completely froze after a full charge and no multi button hard reset method worked at all. Bizarrely what did bring it back to life was yet another 10 second plus power button hold and then placed the front face camera lens close up to a light bulb, whilst maintaining the button press and lo and behold it booted as normal within a couple of seconds of placing it on front of the bulb

I've had a couple Android phones that had a broken power button (my own doing from tinkering inside) and I was always able to power them on by plugging them in to power while holding one of the volume buttons down. I have had more than a few friends with an iPhone that had a broken power button and they also power on once plugged in.

I had this problem with Samsung Galaxy S. It wouldn't boot even after I performed factory reset. I solved the problem by using "Heimdall - Open-Source Cross-Platform Flashing Suite" to reinstall the ROM. After that the device worked just fine.

I agree with Tom E. My Samsung was doing the samething and I opened it up and under the inner power button was one piece of cat hair. Blowing that out did the trick. Until I did this I had to plug it into the charger to get it to turn on which only works if you're near the charger when your phone rings.

My last phone had a power button that pushed, but did nothing. I opened the phone up, and the power button was moved, due to dust and pocket lint. A little cleaning and it worked! Getting the phone open (Samsung Galaxy S 2) was not trivial, but just look for instructions -- someone else HAS to have opened one up and posted instructions online.

I experienced this with my nexus5 twice in a month. The first time it was sort of scary. Then you type "my nexus5 won't turn on or charge" on google and you find many people with the same issue. The vol button up and down and then power button trick fixed it each time.

A *decent* device is not supposed to do this though. I'm surprised to see on the internet so many people being "Ok" with it. Just because there is an easy fix or doesn't occur everyday doesn't make it "OK" imho.

My problem was that i put my phone on charge and i pressed the power button but it didn't work so then i tried the Hold Volume Up + Volume Down + Power. and it worked but it just turned my phone off again then i used my normal charger for my phone and it didn't work so then i realised that my charger was broken so i went to use my brothers charger and it worked. I used my brothers charger yesterday and it didn't work so today i used my brother's charger and i did this method Hold Volume Up + Volume Down + Power. and its working and charging perfectly :)

I got given a GoClever Terra 7oL as an out-of-the-blue gift, but since it was coming up to Christmas I stopped using it hoping I was getting a better tablet. I didn't get a new tablet, so I went home trying to turn on my GoClever. It wouldn't turn on so I thought the battery drained as it does. I plugged it in, but after about 10 mins of charging still nothing where it usually shows me the battery logo. I tried Hard Reset method but still nothing. Please someone help me as this is the only tablet I've got with up to date software ??
