Android Apps on Sale for 30 January 2014: Vignette, Final Fantasy, Might & Magic
Each week we scour current Google Play promotions and cherry-pick the best of the best. This week we have an excellent camera app, a Final Fantasy title, and a funky platformer featuring none other than Little Red Riding Hood.
Because app sales are temporary affairs, by the time you read this, these may no longer be on sale. Worry not: Simply check back next week for some more Android deals!
$2.40, now $1.49)
Endorsed by both Neil Gaiman and Wil Wheaton, Vignette is an excellent camera app. Our full Vignette review may be due for an update, as the interface has been considerably refreshed – but the basic functionality remains. You get many sophisticated filters, and the possibility to save your own presets.
Camera Block – Spyware protect (
$2.69, now $1.89)
Camera Block has a point: Lots and lots of apps on your phone or tablet have permissions to use the camera. Of course, these are usually needed for legitimate reasons — Instagram wouldn’t be worth much without being able to use your camera — but they can still be abused. Theoretically, apps on your phone may be using your camera to take photos and even videos without your knowledge, and then upload them online. Sounds crazy, but crazier things have happened. Camera Block tries to patch this potential vulnerability by disabling camera access, until you need it. I wouldn’t trust it blindly, but it is an interesting approach.
Call Notes Pro (SALE) (
$3.99, now $0.99)
This one’s for business users: If you talk to many people throughout a given day, Call Notes can pop up little reminders when the call begins. These range from the person’s position in the company to their birthday or related calendar events. You can also edit the notes during the call.
Final Fantasy IV: After Years (
$15.99, now $10.99)
Yup, it’s an Android game for $11. But it is a significant drop from its original price of $16. this is a full 3D remake of the game, with ten playable tales, a minimap, and Google Play Game support. It’s well-received, too, with a 4.4-star average out of 1,260 ratings.
Might & Magic Clash of Heroes (
$4.99, now $0.99)
Another epic RPG title, Might & Magic Clash of Heroes comes from publisher Ubisoft. This is another fully remastered title made for Android, and it dropped from $5 to a very affordable $1. It seems more approachable than Final Fantasy IV on a number of levels, from price to actual gameplay. Ubisoft claims the campaign should keep you busy for over 20 hours, which is pretty good entertainment value for a buck. Be warned, though, that this is a large game – you’ll need around 900MB of free space to install it.
TA: Little Red Riding Hood (
$1.99, now $0.99)
A fun little platformer featuring round, rotating “stages” you hop off. Gameplay is quite similar to They Need To Be Fed 2, which has a free version on Google Play. The visuals and style are quite different, though, and the overall game seems like it might be a bit easier than the notoriously-difficult They Need To Be Fed.
Sine Mora (
$5.99, now $2.99)
$2.99 might seem like a high price tag for a shoot’em-up (shmup) game, but Sine More boasts some truly impressive graphics. This particular deal ends in just a few hours, so you’d better rush if you want it. You get a number of control schemes (including a mirrored mode that seems particularly handy), as well as a story mode and over 50 weapon combos.
Tune in next week for some more great Android deals! And of course, feel free to share your finds and favorites in the comments below.
