It’s that time of year. With Valentine’s Day coming up, it’s quickly turning into the season of love. And any Amazon Echo device, or third-party speaker with Alexa built-in, can help make your celebrations even better.
Depending on how much you like to celebrate with your significant other, there’s a lot to do in order to make Valentine’s special. Alexa, the popular and multi-faceted voice-controllable assistant, can help you tackle a surprisingly large amount of tasks.
We’re rounding up some of the ways you can use your voice to help to make the holiday even sweeter — everything from finding that perfect present to enjoying a playlist of love songs and much more.
Voice Shopping for the Perfect Present
As long as you’re an Amazon Prime member, you can shop for that perfect Valentine’s Day gift with just a voice command.
The feature is available with any Echo device, an Amazon Fire TV, or Fire tablet. You will also need to make sure that 1-Click Ordering is turned on for your account. That can be done at the Manage Default Address and 1-Click Settings page.
With the 1-Click settings active, any order will use the default shipping method and payment information on file to make your purchases.
The best way to start is just to say “Alexa, I want to order” along with whatever you’re looking for. The assistant will then run through some well-rated products that are competitively priced.
Alexa will ask if you want to buy the product. You can either say “Yes” or “Next” to hear the next idea. As a nice touch, you can also say “Add to Cart” to save the item to view later.
Voice shopping on the two Echo devices with a touchscreen — the Echo Show and Echo Spot — is even better as you can see an image of the product and scroll back and forth through a list of items.
Once you find that perfect gift, Alexa will ask you to offer one final confirmation of the order.
If you ever want to reorder the same item again, just say “Alexa, reorder [item].” To track the package progress, just say “Alexa, where’s my stuff?” There’s no need to worry about Alexa spoiling the surprise as she will only mention the date of the order and order number by default.
Stream Any Love Song You Can Imagine
And the holiday is a great time to take advantage of Alexa’s most well-known feature — the ability to play and control music from a wide variety of streaming services with just a voice command.
There are a huge number of different music services available to use with Alexa including music from Amazon, the Amazon Music streaming service, Spotify, Pandora, iHeartRadio, TuneIn, and SiriusXM.
To enter your Spotify and SiriusXM login and password information, download the companion Alexa app for iOS or Android devices. From the side menu, select Music Video, & Books and then choose Spotify or SiriusXM.
After that, you can play any love song imaginable from the different services. SiriusXM even has a station dedicated to playing only love songs, all the time.
Along with asking Alexa to play “your song,” voice controls can also turn up/down the volume and skip songs that aren’t setting the right tone for your evening.
Set the Scene With Smart Lighting
Another great way to easily and quickly create a romantic mood on the big day is with smart lighting that can be controlled through Alexa. Connected lighting is a simple and easy-to-use smart home technology.
The Philips Hue line is one of the most well-known. The LED lights are completely compatible with Alexa and a number of other popular smart home ecosystems like Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant, and IFTTT.
If you’re new to smart lighting, there are two great starter kits to take a look at featuring the standard A19 bulb size. The Hue White and Color Ambiance Kit offers four color-changing bulbs and a hub that needs to be connected to your router.
The color-changing bulbs can even sync with music to create that perfect overall vibe for your date. There are a number of great third-party apps that can do that, with one of the best being Hue Disco for iOS or Android devices. Even though the app is named for its Disco capabilities, that’s far from its only setting. Hue Disco can even create a themed light show when playing more romantic tunes.
For a slightly more subdued approach, the Philips Hue White Ambiance Starter Kit sports two dimmable white bulbs and a hub.
While you can’t sync those lights with music, the brightness of each bulb is easy to change with Alexa. That makes it perfect to dim the lights for a romantic movie.
After you’ve got the hang of the Hue system with either starter kit, you can easily expand your smart lighting with a number of different sizes of bulbs and other options like light strips.
Alexa Skills to Try on Valentine’s Day
And there are even a number of fun Alexa skills that are perfect for Valentine’s Day. You can enable any of these by saying “Alexa, enable [skill name].” You can also do that through the Amazon Alexa app for iOS or Android devices, or even the skills portal on the web.
