Alienware’s Concept UFO Could be the Future of Portable Gaming

Dave LeClair 08-01-2020

Alienware might have teased what gaming on the go could look like in the future with its new Concept UFO device. There’s just something about the idea of taking your video games with you wherever you go that has such a wide appeal, and Dell-owned Alienware is most certainly aware of that fact.

Nintendo already changed what we think of as a handheld console with the Nintendo Switch, and Alienware’s new device could completely turn that idea on its head. In many ways, the device is basically a portable Windows PC with a couple of controllers attached to the side.

Alienware showed off its concept device in two form-factors—handheld and attached to a dock. If that sounds familiar to you, it should, because that’s very similar to the functionality offered by the Nintendo Switch console.

Obviously, where Alienware’s theoretical device differs from the Switch is that it’s running Windows 10. That means it can play your games while performing all sorts of other PC-based tasks like editing videos, watching movies, and whatever else you typically do on a computer.

The device comes with an eight-inch, 1200p display. We asked what framerate games were running at, and the company wasn’t prepared to answer anything specific. Alienware also didn’t talk about battery life, which could ultimately be the deal-breaker here, as a portable system needs to last at least a few hours to be useful.

While it’s all very exciting, the list of things we don’t know about the Concept UFO is far longer than what we do. In fact, we don’t even know if this thing will ever see the light of day. Alienware’s rep at CES wouldn’t talk about the hardware inside, so we don’t know what it has for a graphics card (or if it’s simply onboard graphics), processor, or anything else.

In spite of the question marks, the fact remains that Alienware does have a super-portable computer that plays like a Nintendo Switch. I played it, and it works as advertised. It’s lighter than you might expect, which should make playing games for an extended period of time more enjoyable.
