5 Accessories New PlayStation 4 Owners Should Pick Up

Dave LeClair 13-12-2013

So you just got home with your shiny new PlayStation 4 Sony PlayStation 4 Review And Giveaway Ladies and gentlemen, the next generation of video game consoles is here, with the Sony PlayStation 4! Read More , you’re playing some of the launch games, and you realize something is missing. You have your one DualShock 4, and it’s doing the job for you well enough, but you realize, you want some accessories to complement the experience of owning the console a little more.

Fear not new next-gen console owner, because there are some pretty solid accessories available for console right now, and some of definitely worth owning. This list of must-have accessories has everything you need to maximize your PS4 enjoyment.

PlayStation Camera

Unlike the Xbox One 5 Xbox One Games To Be Released Early 2014 You Will Want To Play There’s good news for gamers. While what’s come so far may not have been great, there are some pretty awesome offerings once you turn the calendar on December 31. Read More , the PS4 does not come with its fancy camera in the box. Instead, it’s available as a $60 purchase, (that still makes the PS4 cheaper, even with the optional accessory) and it adds quite a bit to the console.

Like the Xbox One, but to a lesser degree, the PlayStaion Camera can be used to issue voice commands for navigating around the console. It’s not as robust, and the applications are somewhat limited, but it’s still really cool, and it makes navigating the console easier. It also allows for automatic logging in when you sit in front of it, and it lets you use Play Room, which is a fun little diversion offered on the PS4. Time will tell if the camera becomes a deeper part of the console, but for the time being, it’s pretty cool, and for $60, you really can’t go wrong.

An Extra Controller

I don’t think I need to explain this one too much. An extra DualShock 4 allows you to share some of the next-gen gaming goodness with your friends and loved ones, and with the holidays right around the corner, what better time is there to show off your console while actually having another controller for people to play with?

A new DualShock 4 will set you back $60, but when you consider that you will likely be playing games on the console for the next 5-7 years, it’s not a bad investment. Plus, it serves as a backup in case your main controller suffers some kind of a tragic accident (or the most epic of rage quits) and ends it’s life early.

POWER A DualShock 4 Charging Station

Sony has opted to continue using internal batteries in the DualShock 4, as it did with the PlayStation 3. This has its pros and cons, but one of the main drawbacks is, of course, how you handle the batteries dying. For me, my PS4 is all the way across the room, so charging while playing is not an option unless I want to sit on the floor right in front of my TV. Either that, or I need to use my laptop or another USB source to power the charger, which is still less than ideal. That’s where a charging station like this comes into play.

With the POWER station, you can have two controllers charging at all times. It uses AC power, so you don’t need to sit practically on your PS4 to keep things charging, and it’s styled after the PS4 and its controllers, so you don’t have to worry about it looking out of place. Add in the reasonable $25 price tag, and you have a solid accessory that works perfectly for any PlayStation owner who plans on buying a second controller.

USB Extender Cable

Maybe spending $25 for a charging station isn’t your style, or maybe you prefer to have only one controller and you want to play and charge at the same time. The solution is simple and incredibly affordable: a simple USB extender. You can pick up a 10-foot cable for around $6, and it will easily solve all of your controller charging woes quickly and easily.

The other nice thing about an extender like this is that it’s not specific to the PS4, so if you ever encounter a situation where you need a longer USB cable, you can quickly grab it. You can also elect to just get a really long microUSB cable, as it will server the same job, but I prefer the extra versatility of the extender.

A Better Headset

Sony did something great and something poor with the way it handled the PS4 headset. The great thing is the standard 3.5mm jack that works with almost any headset you can find. The bad part is that the one it included feels like a cheap piece of junk. It’s definitely a worthwhile investment to grab a better set if you plan on doing a lot of voice chat and even more so if you plan to route game sound through it.

Since you can use any headset you want, there is no way for to me to recommend a specific pair, and pretty much anything will be better than the one that’s included. You might even have a better set sitting around your house. Either way, you should definitely consider using it, as you will find the experience vastly improved over the uncomfortable set that comes in the box with the PS4

If your going to get a headset I recommend turtlebeach, I have owned them for both ps and Xbox, designed purely for gaming and chat they are a must have for online twitch games with the 3D sound so you can hear which way ppl are coming from, not cheap if you want top of the line but definitely worth it if your a serious gamer. And for hardcore gamers a set of kontrol freaks or thumb stax are a great way to improve your k/d ratio.

I would add one more to the list: Grip-iT analog stick covers. Considering how easy the ps4 controller rubber wears off, those things are a life saver. Aussie gamers can buy them from

An extra controller as backup is highly unnecessary as the availability of the controllers is plentiful. I would recommend a vertical stand if your PS4 is in your room with limited space.

@PCFTW I'm an avid PC gamer myself, but I do game on consoles. I noted Final Fantasy XIV on your list, which is out for PS3 and with a PS4 release slated for April 2014. Now I'll admit, I did hunt that one down specifically, but I noticed a lot of games that perhaps someone who might like a game like GTAV would never dream of even touching. I for one prefer the PC for its superior EVERYTHING, expandability, customization, and the simple fact that it's DIY if you want to go really crazy with it. In the last 5 years, game developers have really catered to the more console loving crowd by offering a comfortable experience on PC with things like native controller support for nearly every game, 3D support consoles do not match, and more timely ports including DLC packs baked in.

Will I ever get the new consoles? Sure, as soon as there are games I deem worth the purchase of them, or when prices come down to what I'm comfortable paying for them. I don't mind spending thousands on a PC as I need it for just about everything. The subject itself is highly subjective, and with that, any point is valid for favor of one platform to another. There is no right answer, just what's right for you. Being that it is subjective, something as trivial as a preference of one UI or button scheme vs. another would also be valid, for that person.

With that, what would I get with a PS4 that isn't on this list? Probably some kind of expanded storage. A 1TB USB drive and a 500GB self installed internal drive worked out nicely for my PS3. I would look at how the PS4 would do with expanding storage, as this was an issue for me last gen.

With the Nyko hardrive extension for the ps4 at $40 when it comes out first half of 2015 it will allow 3.5 inch hard drives aka same as pc internally for ps4, and with a 128mb cache 7200rpm hitachi drive at 6TB . I would say that smokes a external drive option that the xbox One has. As for usb drives its all up to you.

I read on another post you can use voice commands through a headset so you don't need the camera for this feature.

PCFTW, your list is laughable. Most of that stuff is 20 years old and/or terrible shareware crap. Get real. I have both a great gaming PC, a PS3 and as of next week a PS4. If a game is available on both platforms, I'll get the PC version due to mods and graphics. However, I also like sports games and MLB The Show is PS only, Madden hasn't been on PC in a decade and there are some nice console exclusives that I have enjoyed: Heavy Rain, God of War, Gears of War, Forza, Gran Turismo, Beyond Two Souls, Uncharted and many others. So stop the PCMasterRace bullshit already.

"PCFTW, your list is laughable. Most of that stuff is 20 years old and/or terrible shareware crap"

First of all you're wrong. Secondly you've made another great point for me, backwards compatibility. Something you'll never see on the current generation, but you can re-buy the games you already have!, isn't that great?

"If a game is available on both platforms, I’ll get the PC version due to mods and graphics"

I would too, that's my point; Always get the PC version. Better Game play, graphics, performance, and mods.

"However, I also like sports games and MLB The Show is PS only"

      Never heard of it.

"Madden hasn’t been on PC in a decade"

Madden has also been the same game for the past decade, :P
And you bring up another great point; emulation. I love playing games from consoles on PC, the way they're meant to be played. And if the news is correct we will soon have a Xbone, PS4 emulator. Can't wait to play Dead Rising with an acceptable model count, 60fps, and actual AA.

"Heavy Rain, God of War, Gears of War, Forza, Gran Turismo, Beyond Two Souls, Uncharted and many others"

And you more then likely payed over $480 for all of those titles, congratulations. With the Steam Winter Sale I just bought over 10 games all for under $10. Plus god of war is just a simple hack and slash, Beyond Two Souls and Heavy Rain are glorified movies and Forza is a micro transaction trap. You seem to be in great company.

And then there's all of these reasons why PC is MasterRace.

Seriously ditch your console (or sell it to some sucker for 3x as much) and get an amazing PC for $600 that will destroy both consoles.

Its an okay list I guess... Though for owners of both consoles I'd suggest the PC replacement pack, its affordable , usually comes with free games, and the sales are unbeatable. Plus you don't get robbed if you want to buy accessories :P

Point is; don't buy any of these things, they're horrible, and ridiculously overpriced.

      @niels arne

Is that really your only argument? That one game isn't on PC? One exclusive does not a superior platform make. Though in terms of exclusives, you can't even compare PC to console, PC absolutely destroys consoles.

Here's a list of PC exclusives that will never come to consoles
