The iPhone makes a great phone. It makes calls, sends texts and even does picture messaging. That is all good, but even my father’s flip phone from four years ago can do that. What makes the iPhone so awesome is how great it is as a gaming machine. It is hard to believe that such a small, portable device can pack the gaming power that the iPhone does. Hard to believe or not, it is the truth of the matter, and for me, I use my iPhone to game on more than I use my PSP and DS combined. Maybe it’s a matter of convenience, or maybe the games are better, but I would venture to guess that many of you are in the same situation.
Maybe we use our iPhone as a gaming machine so much because there are so many quality free games available for the device that we can play for hours without having to open our wallets. Plenty of games cost money, but you could easily spend your entire iPhone owning life playing quality free iPhone games like the ones I am going to talk about here.
Draw Something plays similar to Words With Friends, in that it features asynchronous multiplayer with friends on Facebook. Instead of playing Scrabble with your friends, you are playing a modified version of Pictionary. You are given three words, worth different amounts of coins based on difficulty and you choose one to draw. You do your best drawing of the word and send it to your friend.
Your friend will receive your drawing and try to guess the word. Your goal is to get them to guess it, and their goal is to guess it, so it is not so much a competitive game as it is a cooperative experience where you are working with your friends to try to get a good streak of guesses going. Draw Something is a nice laid-back game that is a lot of fun to play when you only have couple of minutes.
Jetpack Joyride is one of those games where you have to try to survive as long as possible while all kinds of obstacles get in the way. The difference is that it involves flying on a jetpack instead of running. There are all kinds of powerups available along the way to help you kill bad guys and survive incoming missile attacks. Some of the powerups are really cool. You can grab a giant mech suit that lets you crush enemies and run through most obstacles.
As you run through the level you earn coins, and these can be used to unlock many items that make your character look cooler and perform better. Some of the items are expensive, and it will take a long time to save up to buy them, but it gives you a reason to keep coming back to the game for more. There are also achievements that give you incentives to try to make it as far as you can. Overall, Jetpack Joyride is a fun free game that I have enjoyed thoroughly.
Blood and Glory
This game is very similar to one of the best games ever released on the iPhone, Infinity Blade. Visually it stacks up to Infinity Blade well, but it ramps up the gore a little more. It lacks in the story department, but that’s not to say the concept is not cool. You are a gladiator tasked with fighting in a tournament to the death. It is a fun concept, just a little simpler than Infinity Blade.
The game controls almost identically to Infinity Blade. You swipe to attack, use a shield to block and press left and right on the screen to dodge attacks from your enemies. The game will give you a few tutorial levels to help you get started, but if you have played Infinity Blade, you should have no problem picking it up and running with it. If you are looking for a free game with nice, high-resolution graphics, that is a lot of fun, you should check out Blood and Glory.
So there you have it; three iPhone games that are being downloaded like crazy that you need to check out. You don’t want to be the one missing all the free fun, so fire up your device and get to playing some awesome free iPhone games!
