As screen quality improves, processor speeds increase, and touch controls get more nuanced, doing extensive image editing on your Android device is becoming more practical than it was a few years ago.

While Photoshop IS available on Android in the form of Adobe Photoshop Express and Adobe Photoshop Mix, neither of the two apps are as powerful as the desktop version. Thankfully, there are plenty of free Photoshop alternatives available in the Google Play Store.

Let's take a look at some of the best options.

1. Snapseed

Snapseed is Google's in-house professional photo editing app. It's widely considered to be the best free Photoshop alternative on Android.

The app's features can rival those you'll find on a full-featured desktop app. It has 29 tools and filters, including advanced options such as healing, brightness curves, tonal contrast, and automatic image tuning.

Snapseed can open both RAW and JPEG files. You can even edit RAW DNG files and save them non-destructively or as a JPEG export.

2. Pixlr

Pixlr is well-established as one of the best alternatives to Photoshop on Android.

The app's most significant selling point is the dazzling array of filters, effects, and overlays---in total, more than two million combinations are available.

You'll also have access to a typical suite of basic editing tools such as cropping and rotating, and tools like red-eye filters, skin smoothers, and teeth whiteners.

Anyone who's familiar with Photoshop will be pleased to learn that Pixlr also supports layers, allowing you to merge multiple photos together easily.

A word of warning, however. Pixlr recently introduced an ad-free paid tier. Anecdotally, users say the number of ads on the free version has increased dramatically since the launch of the paid version.

3. AirBrush

If you want to "photoshop" your own selfies, AirBrush is a great app. It'll let you delete errant hairs, cover up blemishes, and add a sparkle to your smile, all with a few easy swipes of your finger. You'll get the same results as you would on Photoshop, but with a lot less effort.

AirBrush also boasts many beauty filters. They can add makeup to a face, insert new backgrounds, and more.

Keep in mind that Airbrush is not a full-featured photo editor. If you're on the hunt for a powerful Photoshop alternative, you should look elsewhere.

4. Fotor

Fotor is similar to Pixlr---it's a cloud-based image editor that is remarkably close to Photoshop in terms of features and functionality. You can adjust the brightness, contrast, saturation, shadows, highlights, noise, and angles with ease.

You'll also find plenty of features that are aimed at casual users. They include borders and stickers, dozens of effects (such as film, nostalgic, retro, and kaleidoscope), and personalized collages.

Beginners will appreciate Fotor's one-click image enhancements. There are 13 auto-enhance tools for you to dig into. They'll let you tweak the lighting, shadows, colors, and much more.

And if you're skilled enough, Fotor even provides a way for you to monetize your images via photo licensing on PxBee.

5. PhotoDirector

PhotoDirector is an Android Photoshop replacement that's been growing in popularity over the last couple of years. All of the usual features are present; you can crop, edit, and stylize your images with an array of tools and filters.

Notable tools include a dehaze, photo animation, red-eye removal, gradient masks, and even a built-in sticker maker.

Once again, the app will appeal to beginners thanks to its one-tap approach to photo editing. You can remove objects from images, fix noise, and much more, even if you don't have any professional-level skills.

6. PhotoLayers

Have you ever taken a great photo of your family or friends, only to have it ruined by the photo's backdrop?

PhotoLayers lets you remove photobombers, cars, or ugly buildings from your image's background, then apply an entirely new one. You can even combine up to 11 photos to create a single photomontage of your best shots.

Sadly, although PhotoLayers is great for background removal, it's not very powerful as an all-round photo editor. Sure, there are some tweaks available (such as color tone) to make your image pop, but you won't find the advanced tools that are available in the other apps on this list.

7. Polarr Photo Editor

Polarr can do all the basics with aplomb. Some of the photo editing features that will stand out to skilled users are selective masks (brush, radial, gradient, color, and luminance), and the ability to change lighting, HSL, toning, fringing, curves, vignettes, and LUT.

However, it is the customized styles where the app really shines. You can create your own style, either from scratch or by using one of the 120 presets, then share your creation with other users via a link or QR code. The availability of the custom styles means the app boasts a thriving community.

8. Photo Editor

Photo Editor supports basic editing such as hue, saturation, contrast, and brightness. It also provides tools to correct your photo's gamma, fine-tune colors using curves, edit photos' backlighting, tweak perspective and red-eye, and lots more besides.

The app also lets you add text, frames, and even save your creations as animated GIFs---all of which help add a splash of personality to your edits.

You can save your images in multiple formats (JPEG, PNG, GIF, WEBP, and PDF), edit the quality of JPEGs, and edit EXIF, IPTC, and XMP metadata.
