Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Details: Action Adventure – October 2009 – Naughty Dog
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is the second of three Uncharted games released so far. All three are excellent, but the second is the pick of the trilogy and one of the best PS3 games you could play. You play Nathan Drake as he runs, jumps, climbs, and shoots his way through an adventure that takes place in various locales around the world. The gameplay is enthralling, and the visuals are stunning.
Three Word Review: Indiana Jones sucks.
Details: First-person action shooter – September 2012 – Gearbox Software
Borderlands 2 is the sequel to the bestselling original released in 2009. The story carries on from where the first one left off, but the sequel improves on every other element. You play one of four vault hunters embarking on a main quest, with lots of smaller side-quests thrown in to help you raise your experience level and squeeze more from the game.
Three Word Review: Fun, funny, fantastic.
Details: User-generated Puzzle Platformer – January 2011 – Media Molecule
LittleBigPlanet 2 is the sequel to the bestselling original released in 2008. While there is a story mode, the meat of the game is when you start creating your own content using the tools at your disposal. And the number of tools is vast, allowing for an equally impressive number of different levels and mini-games to be created. All of which star Sackboy.
Three Word Review: Creative cuteness cubed.
Red Dead Redemption
Details: Open-world Action Adventure – May 2010 – Rockstar San Diego
Red Dead Redemption was a surprise hit, coming from nowhere to win various industry awards. It’s the spiritual successor to Red Dead Revolver, but everything about the new game was ramped up, from the size of the world to the length of the game, from the cast of characters to the variety in gameplay. If you like westerns then this is one of the best PS3 games in the genre that lets you star in one.
Three Word Review: A playable western.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots
Details: Stealth Combat – June 2008 – Kojima Productions
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of the Patriots is the fourth game in the long-running Metal Gear series. It isn’t a game for everybody, and knowledge of the previous titles is a prerequisite. However, for veterans of the series this game represents the pinnacle, being visually impressive and wholly immersive as you guide Solid Snake through an epic adventure.
Three Word Review: Solid stealthy shenanigans.
Batman: Arkham City
Details: Comic Book Action Adventure – October 2011 – Rocksteady Studios
Batman: Arkham City [Broken URL Removed] is the sequel to 2009’s Batman: Arkham Asylum. As the title suggests, this is a game starring the Dark Knight, with a storyline written by veteran Batman writer Paul Dini ensuring this is more than just a cheap licensed tie-in. You play Batman as he tackles the main storyline while encountering all of the biggest, baddest villains from Batman mythology.
Three Word Review: A playable comic.
God Of War III
Details: Third-person Action Adventure – March 2010 – Sony Computer Entertainment
God Of War III is the direct sequel to the first two games, both of which appeared exclusively on the PS2. Every element of the gameplay was fine-tuned for this sequel, and alongside the improved visuals, they add up to an ultra-impressive title. You play Kratos in an adventure loosely based on Greek mythology, fighting gods and monsters on the way to defeating Zeus.
Three Word Review: Vast, epic, historical.
Details: Third-person Crime Investigation – May 2011 – Team Bondi
L.A. Noire is a strange combination of open-world exploring, driving, and combat, all done while investigating crimes in 1940s Los Angeles. It has a similar feel to the Grand Theft Auto series, except you’re now on the right side of the law. It’s an engrossing look at recent history, with some innovative animation techniques adding to the sense of realism.
Three Word Review: Compelling crime caper.
Details: Interactive Psychological Thriller – February 2010 – Quantic Dream
Heavy Rain is unlike any other game on this list or, to tell the truth, any other game ever released. It takes the form of an interactive movie, but one in which you have precise control over the words, actions, and choices of the main characters. It features multiple endings depending on how you progress through the game… which stays with you long after it ends.
Three Word Review: Eerie, interactive, innovative.
Grand Theft Auto IV
Details: Open-world Crime Adventure – April 2008 – Rockstar North
Grand Theft Auto IV is an epic game , the fourth full title in the long-running GTA series. It’s set to be bettered by the forthcoming GTA V , but until that happens Grand Theft Auto IV provides more underworld escapism than any sane person should be able to handle. You play new immigrant Niko Bellic as he slowly works his way up the criminal ladder.
