10 Of The Best Apple Tumblrs You Must Bookmark
You may have noticed that there is a huge appetite for Apple news, views, and rumors on the Web. No other company comes close to having as many headlines written about it or as many articles penned about it and its products as Apple does. While not everyone is a fan of Tim Cook and his merry band of Cupertino geniuses , even those who don’t own a single Apple product cannot help themselves getting drawn in. I count myself in that group.
You probably already know all of the best websites
and best blogs
to read about Apple and its
annual incremental updates exciting product launches, but you may be less aware of the awesome Tumblr sites inspired by Apple. What follows is a list of 10 of the best that exist right now, offering a simple, unedited glimpse into the fanboy abyss.
The Amazing iOS 6 Maps
The Amazing iOS 6 Maps was the inspiration for this article, and it’s about as timely as it gets. As you are no doubt aware by now, Apple added a new feature to iOS 6 called Maps. It was meant to replace the need for Google Maps, but sadly (for Apple, at least) it sucks. This Tumblr features the biggest failures of iOS 6 Maps, which are many and varied. This site will likely last as long as it takes Apple to sort the feature out, which could be several years.
Things Apple Is Worth More Than
Things Apple Is Worth More Than is a Tumblr whose name really says it all. It’s based on the fact that Apple is now worth a gazillion dollars, or something close to that – at the time of writing Apple has a market cap of $617 billion – and this Tumblr lists things that Apple is worth more than. These objects could alternatively be listed as things Apple could buy if it wanted to, and that includes five years of the global coffee industry and four American civil wars.
Samsung Copies Apple
Samsung Copies Apple isn’t a statement of fact made by myself or MakeUseOf, because we don’t want to get sued. But iPierre, the guy responsible for this Tumblr site, believes this to be the case, and he has evidence to prove it. This amounts to endless photos of Apple and Samsung products side-by-side, with the Samsung products looking amazingly like their Apple equivalents, which came first, obviously. I’m not sure a Tumblr can be cited in court, but still.
Apple Desk offers a change of pace, as it’s focused on presenting Apple products in artistic poses, often on a desk and organized neatly, hence the name. Whatever you think of Apple, the company does have an eye for how a product should look, with Jonathan Ive being a big advocate of industrial design. This means that Apple products don’t look out of place when presented in the correct setting with perfect light and with a perfect ambiance. Pretentious?
MACNATICO offers a mix of Apple news, views, photos, and cartoons all brought together in the form of a Tumblr. Many entries are simply a headline and link with a short description posted underneath, but that’s all that’s needed. I found articles about Apple on this site that I was previously unaware of, as they hadn’t made it onto Techmeme and weren’t being shared by all and sundry on social networking sites. Google and Microsoft news appears as a bonus.
Inspired By Apple
Inspired By Apple is a Tumblr that does the same thing as Samsung Copies Apple, except the companies being called out are expanded to include more than just Samsung. Companies accused of being “inspired” by Apple include Research In Motion, LG, Hewlett-Packard, and Lenovo, amongst others. This Tumblr also features opinionated rants on what the author considers swipes at Apple. Which are fun to read whichever side of the fence you sit on.
Mac’s Future is the iPad, at least according to the image heading this Tumblr site. Unlike many others on this list this Tumblr primarily deals with Apple news and views, with discussions on the latest Apple products and company happenings. There are also some gritty opinion pieces which are clearly penned by an unashamed Apple fanboy. Additionally the author hosts an Apple-themed podcast which has passed its 100th episode.
S*** That Siri Says
S*** That Siri Says does exactly what it says on the tin… listing all the greatest things uttered by Siri, which, lest we forget, is still in beta. This Tumblr shows why it will probably always be in beta, with endless examples of pointless statements made by the annoying metallic voice that is Siri. The fact that S*** That Siri Says is still being updated with new entries a year after Siri debuted on the iPhone 4S is nothing short of a miracle. Long may it continue.
ITUAW is the official Tumblr for The Unofficial Apple Weblog. The main site is one of the best-known and longest-running Apple-focused sites on the Web, but Apple’s coverage has expanded to such an extent that there is just too much to be featured on TUAW itself. Thus the not-quite-good-enough stuff ends up here on iTUAW. Much of the coverage, which includes funny asides and video clips, will be of more interest to the average consumer.
Paris Lemon (or parislemon.) is the personal website of MG Siegler, widely considered to be the number two Apple fanboy behind John Gruber of Daring Fireball. The content that appears on this Tumblr isn’t all Apple-oriented, with Siegler also passing judgment on other companies, but Apple is never far from his thinking. There is also the occasional posting about something other than technology, but the less said about that the better.
I hope that list includes some Apple-inspired Tumblr sites you were previously unaware of, and that you’ll now bookmark them for the future. Unless you’re absolutely opposed to the company in every conceivable way, in which case you’ll be better off leaving these Tumblrs well alone.
