How to sync files and printers between Windows 7 computers?
2014-02-27 13:00:06
Correct, Home Basic and Starter editions cannot create a Homegroup, only join an existing Homegroup. Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions can create and join Homegroups. Windows Sync Center is only available on Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions, which allows the ability to sync files and folders with other computers that are set up to sync with each other. Whether Ultimate editions of Windows allows syncing files and folders with Home Basic editions I'm not very clear of or have knowledge of.

You can create a Homegroup on your 7 Ultimate computer and join the Homegroup on your 7 Home Basic computer (Home Basic editions can join a Homegroup, but not create one). Once joined, you can set up files, folders, and printers to share. More information on setting up a Homegroup here: http://compnetworking.about.com/od/windows7networking/a/how-to-use-windows7-homegroup.htm. The issue with syncing fires abd folders is that the Home Basic version of Windows does not include Sync Center. Windows Live Essentials 2011 had Live Mesh, which was a feature that allowed files and folders to be synced with other computers in the same network, but since the update to Windows Essentials 2012, Live Mesh has been dropped in favor of cloud based syncing through Skydrive (now Onedrive). Syncing files between any computer or device can now be done over the internet through the cloud services (though this is not true syncing of files and folders). Hovsep's suggestion seems to be good for a better file syncing service.

•HomeGroup is available in all editions of Windows 7. In Windows 7 Starter and Windows 7 Home Basic, you can join a homegroup, but you can’t create one.http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/why-cant-i-create-a-homegroup

There are several ways to do this...but the easiest is to use a cloud storage service such as Drive or Dropbox. Create the folder on both computers then connect to your cloud service on both computers. The folders will sync even if the computers are on different continents.
