Every time I try to download mp3s to my computer (to put into iTunes and hence my iPod) QuickTime takes over and there is no download. I fixed this problem on another computer last year, so I know it's possible. I just can't remember how. Please help! The people who made QuickTime are unconscionable.

I totally agree with you. I hate quick time - it is such as pain. What you want is how to change the default program for a file type.
