I have Windows 7 Home. I used to search for a file by hitting the Windows button and then typing words for files, such as 'reading'. Suddenly it doesn't work anymore. How can I fix it?

Hello you could also try these 2 tricks:-- Right click on start button -- select properties-- click on the start menu tab -- select customize-- click on default settingsBy doing this, it will reset the start menu back to default.or, -- start-- control panel-- select Programs and Features-- select Turn Windows features on or off-- enable Indexing service-- enable Windows search

I would start troubleshooting by looking into the Indexing Options:1. click Start > Run (Windowskey + R)2. type
control.exe srchadmin.dll
3. hit enterAdd all the resources (locations) you want to search in there. For example:- your User folder [to enable search in all your personal folders]- Startmenu...When you are done and/or everything looks ok in there I suggest to klick on
Advanced
and hit the
Rebuild
button.Another good thing to do is to make sure the
Windows Search
service is configured to run.1. click Start > Run (Windowskey + R)2. type
services.msc
3. hit enterThen look for
Windows Search
and make sure it is set to "Automatic" and it is started.

HiHow to fix it automatically:1. Download the hotfix from Microsoft.http://support.microsoft.com/hotfix/KBHotfix.aspx?kbnum=977380&kbln=en-us2. Install the hotfix and then reboot your machine.orYou have to open regedit and do the followingThe error is due to an invalid registry key.HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerFolderTypes{ef87b4cb-f2ce-4785-8658-4ca6c63e38c6}TopViews{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}This controls the value Start Menu's grouping values. The value is supposed to be:“System.StartMenu.Group” When the search stops working because this value is set to Null.1.In order to change this value start regedit.2.Browse to the HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerFolderTypes{ef87b4cb-f2ce-4785-8658-4ca6c63e38c6}TopViews{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000} registry key3.Click Modify4.Change the value to System.StartMenu.Group 5.RebootorThe answer that worked for me was to manually delete a registry key as follows:1.Using regedit or equivalent (which can be found in your windows folder - c:windows by default).2.Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerFolderTypes{ef87b4cb-f2ce-4785-8658-4ca6c63e38c6}3.Right-click on this sub key, and then select Delete.4.Close regedit5.Reboot the machine.or1. End Task on EXPLORER.EXE from Task Manager.2. Start the Registry Editor3. Look for the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerFolderTypes{EF87B4CB-F2CE-4785-8658-4CA6C63E38C6}TopViews{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}4. Rename the key so it looks like the following:HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerFolderTypes{EF87B4CB-F2CE-4785-8658-4CA6C63E38C6}TopViews{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}.BACKUP5. From Task Manager click on File | New Task (Run) and type EXPLORER.EXE and hit return. 6. Now try your search from the Start Menu againorRight click on Start menu and select Properties. Now click the Customize button. Now you can Search for the option that you generally use often for search. This will speed up your search to a great extent. Click Start, Run and type the following command:%systemroot%inf > Clicking Ok should open the INF folder > Locate the file "srchasst.inf" > Right-click the file and then click "Install".for another wayHow to Turn Windows 7 Search On or Offhttp://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/25343-windows-search-turn-off.html
