Do you like to sing along to your favorite Spotify tunes, but always have to look up the lyrics to ensure your karaoke is accurate? You're in luck. Spotify is now testing its live lyrics feature to some people in the US.

Spotify Rolls Out Real-Time Lyrics

If you're in the US, you might see a new Spotify feature that lets you display lyrics in real-time against the music that you're playing. The lyrics are provided by music data company Musixmatch.

"Might" is the key word there, since this is still in a test phase. That means that only a group of users will see the feature while Spotify measures its impact. It's unknown how many users make up the test group.

Lyrics have been a long-requested feature for Spotify, so it'd be surprising if the feature didn't eventually get rolled out to everyone, but nothing is for certain.

In an email to Engadget, a Spotify spokesperson said:

We can confirm we’re currently testing our lyrics feature to a select number of users in the US. At Spotify, we routinely conduct a number of tests in an effort to improve our user experience. Some of those tests end up paving the way for our broader user experience and others serve only as an important learning. We don’t have any further news to share at this time.

Are Lyrics New for Spotify?

Strictly speaking, real-time lyrics aren't a new feature. That's because it's been available in countries like Brazil, Mexico, India, and Singapore since June 2020.

In fact, long before that, Spotify had a live lyrics feature worldwide. It also came as a result of a partnership with Musixmatch, though the feature was unceremoniously removed when the agreement between the two companies came to an end.

Spotify then replaced it with an integration with Genius, in a feature dubbed "Behind the Lyrics", which displays information and fun facts about some songs. This is also something which is available on Apple Music, which itself also supports live lyrics.

Engadget reports that "Behind the Lyrics" will be removed from Spotify if the live lyrics feature rolls out wider. It likely won't be missed by many.

For those people in regions that don't yet have live lyrics, there is the option to use other apps to view lyrics in Spotify.

Of course, you can also use one of the internet's many lyric websites, though these won't display in time to your Spotify music.
