It’s finally that time of year again: the leaves are changing color, the pumpkins are out, we’ve got our sweaters on, and the veil is at its thinnest. If you still feel like it was New Year just yesterday, we have a list of the perfect Nintendo Switch games to get you in that spooky Halloween mood.

So grab a cup of hot cocoa, snuggle up with a warm blanket, and get ready to celebrate the spooky season with your Nintendo Switch.

1. Pumpkin Jack

There is no other game that screams Halloween quite like Pumpkin Jack. This game finds that perfect balance between spooky but not so scary that you are in danger of peeing your pants a little. Regardless of its spooky atmosphere, Pumpkin Jack is a family-friendly 3D platformer that inspires joy rather than screams.

Pumpkin Jack is best described as a cross between PlayStation's Medieval and The Nightmare Before Christmas. So if you are a fan of either of those franchises, you will be a fan of Pumpkin Jack.

Pumpkin Jack is the perfect Switch game to play with your family during Halloween. But if you don't want to inspire any nightmares, there are also plenty of non-scary Nintendo Switch exclusive games to choose from.

2. Little Nightmares I & II

The Little Nightmares franchise may look cute at first glance, but don’t let that adorable yellow rain jacket fool you! Little Nightmares is deceivingly frightening. Rather than focusing on jump scares like most horror games, Little Nightmares relies on disturbing, towering, and bone-chilling character designs to frighten its victims.

Little Nightmares uses puzzle-solving, stealth elements, and expert storytelling to weave a perfectly spooky adventure that is certain to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up during Halloween.

3. Luigi’s Mansion 3

If you actually want to be able to sleep on Halloween, you might be tempted to reach for Luigi’s Mansion 3. Luigi’s Mansion 3 is a charming game that, despite all the ghosts, is a hilarious and light-hearted adventure.

It is also incredibly unique, with combat mechanics that see you flinging ghosts around the room with a vacuum cleaner and spawning a jello-like body double named Gooigi to help you solve puzzles.

Gooigi can be controlled by a second player. So if you were looking for a spooky game to play with your kids this Halloween, Luigi’s Mansion 3 would be a perfect fit.

4. Limbo

Limbo is an artistic first title from indie developers, Playdead, that is guaranteed to grip you for the entirety of its six-hour-long playtime. Limbo is an expertly minimalistic puzzle platforming adventure. There is no background music in Limbo, which is an interesting feature that enhances the suspense and loneliness you feel as you wander the monochromatic forest.

There is also no story or cutscenes to draw you out of the experience. You wake up as a child lost in a dangerous forest with an incredibly simple goal that doesn’t need to be explained in words— get the hell out of there!

5. Dead by Daylight

Dead by Daylight is an online multiplayer horror game that plays out like all of your favorite slasher films. There are four players, facing off against one vicious and unhinged murderer. The gameplay of Dead by Daylight changes drastically depending on which role you choose. You can either play as a survivor or the killer.

The role of the survivor is to fix a number of generators scattered around the map, open the gates, and escape from a maniacal monster that wants to hang you on a hook to sacrifice to an unknown entity. The role of the killer is more simple, kill everyone.

Dead by Daylight is an incredibly addictive gameplay loop that will keep you hooked for hours (pun intended).

6. Fatal Frame: Maiden of Blackwater

Fatal Frame: Maiden of Blackwater is another one of the Wii U's popular titles that have now made its way onto the Nintendo Switch. The Fatal Frame franchise is a long-running series of horror games where you are armed with a unique weapon: the Camera Obscura, a camera imbued with powers that send ghosts to the afterlife.

Taking snaps of ghosts and unraveling the mysteries of a curse in the spooky setting of Japanese temples make Fatal Frame: Maiden of Blackwater an incredibly unique experience that you won't find anywhere else.

7. Dying Light: Definitive Edition

There are few things scarier in this world than the threat of a zombie outbreak, and few Switch games do zombie outbreaks better than Dying Light. This is a first-person survival game that uses a tried-and-true horror game formula.

Looting, sneaking, or simply smashing your way through hordes of zombies is very satisfying in Dying Light, even more so with the Gold-tier electric guitar weapon equipped. If you are into more traditional horror games, Dying Light won't leave you disappointed.

8. Dark Souls Remastered

Dark Souls is definitely not for the faint of heart. This cult classic RPG has solidified itself as an almost universally known title, even becoming the namesake of a whole new genre of gaming. The brooding world is filled to the brim with unsettling and harrowing enemies that could easily crawl their way into your nightmares.

But perhaps the scariest thing about Dark Souls is its difficulty level. Dark Souls is a brutal experience, but its difficulty makes it that much more rewarding when mastered. It is a title that will scare you in more ways than one during Halloween.

9. Friday the 13th: The Game Ultimate Slasher Edition

If you are a fan of Jason Voorhees and the Friday the 13th movies, this game is pretty much that. It plays out just as you would expect it to. Seven camp councilors are trying to escape the murderous Jason Voorhees. Friday the 13th plays similarly to Dead by Daylight, with players facing off in a seven-on-one bloodbath in online multiplayer.

Although it does bear similarities to Dead by Daylight, Friday the 13th is still a unique experience with much more variety in terms of making your escape and even murdering your victims. It is also one of the few Nintendo Switch games with native voice chat, which makes plotting your escape a much more intuitive and fleshed-out experience.

10. Resident Evil 4

It would be blasphemous to make a list of horror games and not include at least one Resident Evil title. Resident Evil has been a leading force in the survival horror genre, and the fourth entry in the series is arguably one of the most popular in the franchise.

Resident Evil games expertly craft the intense feeling of suspense and dread that constantly has you on the edge of your seat waiting for the next jump scare. Resident Evil 4 has been remade, remastered, and re-released almost too many times to count, solidifying itself as a cult classic and a great place to dive into the series for the first time.
