I just wondered that if we can extend partitions, then can we split a partition into two? How? Is this a destructive process, will it remove data?

go to "computer management" pick your hard drive to to "action" and click "shrink volume" and pick the size you want your partition to be 1000mb= 1gb after picking the size you want click on it and right click it to "new simple volume " and pick the maximum size then click "assign the following drive"then format it as "NTFS" and then you will wait until it's formated and it's finished, you will see it on under "my computer"

you can use windows default software to create partition in your laptop/PC. From device manager you can shrink the volume into many partition. Before do partition, better you backup all your file first.

I would recommend using gparted for this process, it involves taking a larger partition, shrink it and create a new partition on the free space.http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php

A drive partition cannot be split in a single operation. In order to get the same effect, you would need to shrink the existing partition and then create a new partition in the newly freed space. In some cases, existing files would need to be moved to a new location in the partition as well. Tools such as Paragon's Partition Manager and Hard Disk Suite will automatically move data if necessary as part of the shrink operation. If moving data is not required, the entire process can be done if a couple of minutes, otherwise it could take hours depending on the size of the drive in question, the amount of data that needs to be moved, and other considerations.
