Why is there no sound despite speakers plugged in?
The computer has internal speakers. On connecting it, there is some noise but on playing streaming media there is no sound.
Sound settings show volume "up". Windows 7 sound says "speaker or headphone not plugged in" though it is plugged.

I think the problem is with the software that plays the media, so you should note which software you use. Try to tweak its settings. The question is not clear enough for me, so I'll try to give every solution that comes to mind.First of all make sure the speakers work with another computer.Right click the speaker on the right corner of the taskbar and click "open volume mixer". If everything is turned up, than right click on the speaker again and click "playback devices". Make sure there is a tick next to the icon.Try going to Control Panel>Device ManagerIf there is an exclamation mark in "Sound, Video and Controller" sub menu, or on any driver that has to do with sound. Try to right click and update it.If you elaborate the question a little bit, maybe I can be of more help.

Check that it is definitely plugged into the correct socket. On most PCs, the sockets are colour coded, and loudspeakers should be plugged into the green socket, but I have seen PCs that use other colour schemes...

Is this a laptop or desktop? Are the speakers turned on? Right-click on the speaker icon on the bottom-right of the taskbar and click "playback devices." You should see all possible output devices - does the one you want have the green bar next to it moving up and down while something is playing?Have you made sure that you set the speakers as the default device and they are enabled? Right-click the desired device in the above menu and be sure it's the default and not disabled. Are you sure you have the cord plugged into the output jack (headphone icon next to it) and not the input jack (microphone icon)?
