I have a Dell Inspiron 531 computer running Windows 7 64-bit. Everything internally has been upgraded to accommodate this OS, but lately, lets say within the last year, the sound just stops working.
I've checked the drivers and updated them when necessary, but the problem persists. The only solution I've found so far that works is to restore the system from a point in time when the sound was working. Somebody please HELP!!!!

Open device manager and select your sound device. Right-click on it and select properties. Click on the Driver tab and then click the Roll back driver button to revert to the previously installed driver. (If rolling back your system via System Restore fixes the problem and it automatically updates again, it will drop the new driver on again causing these problems. Using the driver rollback option will generally make it so that the newer driver will not be reinstalled.)

Hello, does it happen when you are doing something specific like watching a movie, listening to music, etc, or it is just out of the blue? Does your computer use the creative labs driver or is it realteck? According to the Dell site http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=INSP_DSKTP_D531&os=WLH&osl=en&catid=&impid=there are no windows 7 drivers at all, only for vista 32. Have you tried uninstalling the driver on device manager and restart? If you do that, it will use the generic driver that comes with windows 7. See if the generic drivers works for you. Once system restarts, it will look for a driver compatible with your card. If it finds a compatible driver, it will ask you if you want to install it. To find out if your system is compatible with windows 7, you can follow the steps on the link provided below. When you run the compatibility tool, it will let you know what hardware/software is compatible with windows 7. This tool can fix some issues too. It will also show you desktops compatible with windows 7:http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kcs/document?c=us&l=en&s=gen&docid=DSN_360683&isLegacy=trueFor troubleshooting your system with regards to drivers, you can follow the steps on the following link:http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kcs/document?c=us&l=en&s=gen&docid=DSN_361553&isLegacy=true
