General Motors has used CES 2021 to join the increasingly important eVTOL air-taxi business by announcing a battery-powered personal aircraft at the annual tech tradeshow.

In something that's more akin to The Jetsons than any cars you'll see on the road today, the Cadillac-branded craft can take off and land vertically, has four rotors, and is powered by a 90-kWh EV motor. According to the renderings and animations, the craft will be able to fly at 56 mph.

The new GM air taxi is still very much in the concept stage, but you can be sure we are going to hear more about this form of travel in the coming years.

We've already seen Hyundai and Aston Martin discuss similar projects, and on the same day that GM was announcing its new idea at CES, we also saw Archer and Fiat Chrysler partner together in a bid to enter the sector.

Reports suggest the Archer/Hyundai model will have a 60-mile range and will use a 187kWh battery pack. It will also be able to fly at 150 mph; a significant step up on the 56 mph GM version.

Both models are clearly aimed at urban mobility rather than long-distance travel and offer a way to both reduce pollution and cut congestion. George Jetson would be proud.
